Nissan LEAF: Gas Powered Everything commercial
Nissan North America has unveiled a new ad campaign that asks "What if everything ran on gas?" Created to promote their electric powered Leaf model, the commercial takes a humorous look at the advantages of electricity. More interestingly, Nissan takes a swipe at the Chevrolet Volt which is a range-extended electric vehicle that uses a petrol engine to extend its 25 to 50 mile (40 to 80 km) range on electricity alone. Nissan will begin airing 15-second teasers later this week, before debuting the full commercial on June 12th during the NBA Finals in the U.S.

Red Bull Project X2010 prototype - the construction
Red Bull has released a new video that shows how the X2010 (aka X1 prototype) was transformed from a Gran Turismo 5 fixture into a full-scale model. Built by Industrial Design Consultancy, the real life X2010 features individually milled sections and a design created by Red Bull's Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey. While the mock up doesn't have a powertrain, the virtual X2010 has a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that produces 1500 PS (1103 kW / 1479 hp) and 714 Nm (527 lb-ft) of torque. This immense power in combination with a fan that creates a suction effect with immense downforce allows the futuristic car to accelerate from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 1.4 seconds, 0-200 mph (322 km/h) in 6.1 seconds, and onto a top speed of 280 mph (450 km/h). Lateral acceleration can reach 8.75G - at the very limit of what the human body can withstand.

Ferrari's Alonso and Massa ride world's fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World
The Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro drivers visited Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the theme park centred on the Maranello marque. It is located on Yas Island, the venue which hosts the nineteenth and final round of the Formula 1 World Championship. Felipe and Fernando arrived in the Emirates on Tuesday night to bring the curtain down on this closely contested season and today they were taken to the Scuderia Challenge, an attraction in the park which allows people to tackle a simulated lap of the Yas Marina Circuit at the wheel of a 430 Scuderia Challenge car. Four journalists were in attendance, Ottavio Daviddi of Tutto Sport, Stefano Mancini of La Stampa, Laurent Dupin of TF1 and Julien Febreau of Europe 1. These men were the top qualifiers of a competition held yesterday for the international media. The two drivers were bubbling with excitement having just experienced the Formula Rossa, the world's fastest rollercoaster. "Really incredible," was the unanimous verdict of Fernando Alonso who won the first race on the simulator and Felipe Massa, at the end of the breathtaking lap. "Thanks to this attraction, all lovers of speed, like us will be able to experience, for once in their lives at least, the unique sensation of being launched into the air at 240 kilometres per hour, as well as enjoying what is a truly great day for all real Ferrari fans."

2017 Nissan GT-R at Nissan Tochigi factory
Making its global debut at the New York International Auto Show this past March, the 2017 Nissan GT-R has been updated with an exciting new look both inside and out, as well as major driving performance enhancements in key areas, including a significantly reinforced chassis and more power from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter 24-valve V-6. The new GT-R is also more comfortable than ever, with a new sense of elegance and civility that one would rarely find in such a high-performance super sports car. In all, these revisions represent the most significant changes made to the model since it was introduced in the U.S. as a 2009 model.

Why Buy? | 2018 Audi SQ5 Review
Motor1 Senior Editor Jake Holmes gets behind the wheel of Audi’s SQ5 to see if it’s a truly compromise-free vehicle. For more Audi SQ5: https://www.motor1.com/Audi/SQ5/ As-tested price: $65,800 Is the Audi SQ5 that mythical car that does every single thing well? Consider, for instance, that it can reach 60 miles per hour in just 5.1 seconds, has an active rear differential to get power to the ground effectively, and has adjustable air suspension that lowers for sportier driving. At the same time, you’ll find generous cargo room and space for five passengers, a lengthy list of technology options, and even the ability to raise that same air suspension for some mild off-road excursions. On top of that, the SQ5 builds on the lovely design, both inside and out, that already impressed us on the regular Audi Q5. That is has even more performance and slightly sharpened styling is only a bonus. What, then, can the SQ5 not do? Is this a no-compromise SUV? That’s a lofty claim, so we put the SQ5 through our rigorous Why Buy? tests to see just how well this performance crossover stacks up in everyday use. New Lamborghini V12 Engine Assembly
Finally, some hard facts right from Lamborghini. The Italian supercar-maker has announced details on its new V12 power plant which is expected to debut in the upcoming Murcielago replacement recently speculated to be named Aventador. The new engine is a naturally aspirated 6.5 liter V12, known internally as the L539, with a total output of 515 kW (700 PS) at 8,250 rpm and 690 Nm of torque available at an engine speed of 5,500 rpm. The new V12 was developed by Lamborghini at its Sant'Agata Bolognese facility. It comes with a classic cylinder bank of 60 degrees and is compact - measuring 665 millimeters tall, 848 mm wide and 784 mm in length. It has a bore diameter of 95 mm and a cylinder stroke of 76.5 mm. The nitride-hardened crankshaft weighs just 24.6 kg while the engine weighs a total of 234 kg. The 6.5 liter V12 also comes with two mufflers in a single casing - one low-volume and the other high for that pitch-perfect Lambo sound. Also newly developed to accompany this engine is the ISR (Independent Shifting Rods) transmission. A 7-speed, single clutch gearbox with exceptionally quick shift times due to the independent shifting rods - Lamborghini claims almost 50 percent less than a standard dual-clutch gearbox. The independent shift rods work similar in concept to a dual-clutch - as one rod is disengaging the current gear, the second rod is already engaging the next one. Weight reduction is a theme here too, as the new gearbox weighs in at just 70 kg. The transmission comes with three driver settings - Strada, Sport and Corsa mode - with Corsa mode made for high-performance driving that also includes a launch control function. http://www.worldcarfans.com/110111529573/lamborghini-reveals-new-v12-engine-with-700-horsepower

2012 Camaro ZL1 laps Nürburgring in 7:41:27
GM's North American president, Mark Reuss, has confirmed a Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap time of 7 minutes and 41.27 seconds for the 2012 Camaro ZL1. That time on the full-length, 20.832 km (12.944 miles), of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit beats out such track performers as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the BMW M3 GTS - putting the ZL1 in solid supercar territory. (Most lap times are measured on the 20.6 km stretch of the track, stopping 200 meters short of the end.) The test, though, was conducted by GM and not independently. The time was set by GM's own test driver Aaron Link.

2011 Ford Mustang GT - New 5.0 Ti-VCT V8 Promo
The 2011 Ford Mustang GT features the new 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine. Packing 412 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, the engine produces 97 hp and 65 lb-ft more than the 4.6-liter V8 used in the 2010 Mustang GT. Despite the added power, Ford projects fuel economy will rise to 17 city / 25 highway (up from 17 city / 23 highway) for models equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. The fuel economy rating for the six-speed manual will remain unchanged at 16 city / 24 mpg highway. To squeeze out the extra mileage, Ford equipped the car with Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT), an Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system, and an additional rear decklid seal (to improve aerodynamics).

Why Buy? | 2017 Toyota 4Runner Review
Motor1 Executive Editor Seyth Miersma takes Toyota’s oldschool 4Runner for a spin to see how it holds up in 2017. For more Toyota 4Runner: https://www.motor1.com/toyota/4Runner/ As-tested price: $40,220 Some might call the 2017 Toyota 4Runner an anachronism: A vehicle built during a time when SUVs were more like trucks, less like cars, and far less-well suited for the mainstream than today. Those descriptors are true, but they cut both ways. Today, if you’re looking for a rugged, simple SUV with true off-road ability and with the potential to carry five (or more), people, well, you’re looking at a short list. With body-on-frame construction, a solid rear axle, and a rough powertrain, the 4Runner is either exactly what you want in a vehicle, or nothing like it. I couldn’t help feeling somewhat charmed by Toyota’s aging off-roader – who doesn’t love something this purposeful? And while our Why Buy? series is designed to evaluate vehicles within the context of their current day competitive sets, I often found myself offering a bit of praise for the old girl, despite obvious weaknesses. Watch the whole video above, and don’t miss out on future episodes, every Thursday, on our YouTube channel. Why Buy? | 2018 Volvo V90 Review
Motor1 Senior Editor Jake Holmes takes Volvo’s handsome V90 for a spin to see if it’s the wagon we’ve been waiting for. For more Volvo V90: https://www.motor1.com/volvo/v90/ As-tested price: $68,290 Volvo’s 90-Series cars – the S90 luxury sedan, XC90 SUV, and this V90 station wagon – are all stars in their own right. Balancing style, performance, and a healthy dose of luxury appointments, it’s hard not to like the models. But if there’s one we love above them all, it might be this slick, roomy V90. The appeal starts with the Volvo’s taut, distinctive styling, which stands out without looking ostentatious. It continues inside, where impeccably finished materials give the cabin a warm, living room-like feel. And there’s even more appeal once on the move, with a gutsy twincharged four-cylinder engine and superbly composed suspension working in tandem. Of course, the V90’s ultimate appeal is its station wagon form factor. Able to fit a huge amount of cargo in its hold, yet lighter and lower than a traditional SUV, it’s the perfect in-between vehicle for someone who wants to drive a car while carrying as much as they might in their crossover. For a more thorough look at just why the 2018 Volvo V90 is such an impressive do-everything vehicle, watch as we put it through our Why Buy? testing regime in the video above. 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid | Why Buy?
Motor1 Managing Editor Brandon Turkus takes the Plug-In Hybrid model of the Hyundai Ioniq for a spin in this week’s Why Buy? For more Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid: https://www.motor1.com/hyundai/ioniq-plug-in-hybrid/ As-tested price: $33,060 Are you looking for a green car but aren't quite ready for a pure electric car? Then a plug-in hybrid may be the answer for you. These thrifty offerings pack traditional hybrid systems – a gas engine and an electric motor – but come with an rechargeable battery pack that can via a plug, providing enough electric range to cover the average commute. The 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In is one of the latest. Like the other two members of the Ioniq family, it's calm styling and relatively normal driving character belie the fact that it's so advanced. The Ioniq Plug-In still uses a 1.6-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder to produce 104 horsepower and 109 pound-feet of torque, just like the Ioniq Hybrid. It has a bigger electric motor – 45 kilowatts to the Hybrid's 30 – but the torque output is the same, at 125 lb-ft, as is the total system horsepower, at 139. But where the standard Ioniq Hybrid has a meager 1.56-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, the Plug-In gets a much heartier 8.9-kWh setup. That grants it up to 29 miles on a full charge, which we found more than usable for everyday tasks during our testing. Hyundai says a standard wall plug will recharge the battery in about 8.5 hours, although our tester was a little bit faster than that. And if you have access to a 220-volt outlet, a fully battery is available in just over two hours. Despite this all-electric ability, the Ioniq Plug-In doesn't feel substantially different from the Ioniq Hybrid, or for that matter a gas-only compact sedan. It's not especially powerful, but the electric torque means passing maneuvers aren't a chore. And the ride is mostly comfortable for everyday use, although the outright handling ability is low. But for most consumers, that's not going to be an issue. The Ioniq Plug-In is an excellent way to try out all-electric driving without taking the plunge for a full-electric car. To find out more, watch our latest episode of Why Buy. SPECIFICATIONS: ENGINE 1.6-Liter I4 OUTPUT 106 Horsepower / 109 Pound-Feet BATTERY 8.9-kWh Lithium-Ion MOTOR 60 Horsepower / 125 Pound-Feet TRANSMISSION 6-Speed DCT CHARGE TYPE 110-Volt (Level 1), 240-Volt (Level 2) CHARGE TIME 8.0 Hours (Level 1), 2.25 Hours (Level 2) EV RANGE 29 Miles DRIVE TYPE Front-Wheel Drive SEATING CAPACITY 5 CARGO VOLUME 23.8 Cubic Feet BASE PRICE $28,300 AS TESTED $33,060 Subscribe to our channel to see weekly Why Buy? videos, and lots more new car review content. Ralph Lauren Classic Car Collection Exhibition in Paris (Part 1)
Ralph Lauren Reveals His Classic Car Collection In Europe For The Very First Time Ralph Lauren is transporting his most exquisite car collection to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris for a special exhibit called "The Art of the Automobile: Masterpieces from the Ralph Lauren Collection". Last night stars rubbed shoulders at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, where they were the first to see Ralph Lauren's Classic car collection in Europe. Jean Reno marvelled at the beauty of the cars, expressing that the cars are historic but modern. Zhang Ziyi spoke about how much she loves visiting Paris and the passion of the city. The former F1 driver, Jackie Stewart, fondly recalls driving and racing with Ralph Lauren in the LM Ferrari in the collection. The exhibition opens from the 28th of April, where a selection of Ralph Lauren's most prestigious sports cars from the 1930s to the present day is on show for the first time in Europe at Paris' Musée des Arts Décoratifs. 17 outstanding cars, chosen by the curator Rodolphe Rapetti, outline the main phases of European automobile history. Stylish not only in clothing but also in automobiles, world renowned designer Ralph Lauren has established himself as one of the world's major car collectors. His impressive collection includes a 1938 Bugatti, a 1958 Ferrari Testa Rossa and a 2010 Lamborghini Murcielago; making Ralph Lauren's range of cars 'a museum of automotive history, an archive of performance machines that represent the finest achievements in motorsport'. With this collection, Ralph Lauren shows that the automobile is a major art form created by the industry's biggest names: Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Porsche and of course, Ferrari, the high point of this unique collection. The exhibition will be the first time his collection will be shown in Europe; and with the distance the cars were required to travel, the transportation and instillation of cars was planned and carefully executed to maintain high standards of care.

This past Thursday, the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid made its driving debut on a closed road in Monterey California, just days prior to its appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. After being shipped over from Germany by plane, engineers handed the keys of the new 918 Spyder Hybrid to Porsche AG Design Chief Michael Mauer. The car drove under its own power which comes from the mid mounted 3.4 liter V8 out of the RS Spyder as well as in all electric mode which powers just the front wheels. The 918 Spyder prototype combines high-tech racing features and electro-mobility to offer a fascinating range of qualities: An emission level of just 70 grams CO2 per kilometre on fuel consumption of three litres/100 kilometres (equal to 94 mpg imp) truly outstanding even for an ultra-compact city car, on the one hand, combined with the performance of a super sports car and acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just under 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph) plus, and a lap time on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT, on the other.

Ferrari 458 Speciale - promo
The Ferrari 458 Speciale has a dry weight of 1,290 kg (2,843 lbs) and can perform the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in just three seconds, while 0-124 mph (0-200 km/h) takes 9.1 seconds. The Speciale has managed to lap the Fiorano test track in 1 minute 23.5 seconds, making it 1.5s quicker than the 458 Italia. Ferrari cooperated with Pininfarina for 458 Speciale's styling which is mostly the result of various aerodynamic tweaks. For example, it comes with front and rear moveable aerodynamic flaps that automatically adapt to reduce drag and balance downforce as necessary. It also comes with a Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) system that can analyze the car's slip angle, compare it to a target figure and then optimizes torque management through the traction control system and torque distribution between the two wheels.

Ford F150 and Honda Civic frontal crash test by IIHS
When large, truck-based SUVs collide with passenger cars or minivans, the results can be devastating for the occupants of the latter. But fatalities in such accidents are on the decrease in the United States thanks to measures employed by automakers. Traffic deaths are down 64 percent since the year 2000 due to changes in automobile design such as lower bumpers for SUVs and better-protect cabin cells for passenger cars. In 2000, the death rate for car and minivan passengers in collisions with trucks or SUVs was 44 deaths per million. That came down to 16 deaths per million by 2009. The study was conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a private-sector group based in Arlington, Virginia. "By working together, the automakers got life-saving changes done quickly," said Joe Nolan, the institute's chief administrative officer. Why Buy? | 2017 Mazda CX-5 Review
Motor1 Senior Editor Jake Holmes gives Mazda’s new CX-5 the Why Buy? treatment to see if the best-driving affordable SUV is now the best across the board. For more Mazda CX-5: https://www.motor1.com/mazda/CX-5/ As-tested price: $32,785 Look back through the archives of our Why Buy? reviews and you’ll notice us referencing one affordable crossover as a benchmark time and time again. Since its launch in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 has enthralled us with the way it brings genuine driving fun to a type of vehicle typically judged only for its spaciousness and fuel efficiency. Not that the CX-5 was without its flaws. Over the years, Mazda worked to soften its ride quality and hush its cabin. This year, the 2017 CX-5 arrives with sweeping changes from front to back, including a smart face lift both inside and out, and there’s more equipment on offer, too. Mazda’s crossover was already widely praised for being the best-driving affordable SUV you could buy. With all these efforts, is it now the best in every respect? 20 Years of Land Rover Discovery
Workhorse, tow car, law enforcer, status symbol, people carrier, mud plugger; few cars can claim to fulfil any of these duties with genuine conviction. Yet since 16 November 1989 20 years ago today one car has consistently met all those challenges and more, earning itself iconic status as the ultimate all-purpose vehicle. That car is the Land Rover Discovery. Designed originally to plug the gap between the utilitarian attributes of the iconic Land Rover Defender and the more luxurious characteristics of the flagship Range Rover, Discovery soon became the perfect niche vehicle for the growing demands of the family 4x4 market. "The Discovery legend has been built on innovative design and advanced technology. From the introduction of high-efficiency direct-injection diesel technology into the 4x4 market in 1989, to pioneering occupant safety with the adoption of twin airbags in 1998, Discovery has led the way." says Phil Popham, Managing Director. "It is truly the best loved SUV the world over. Today, we sell the Discovery in 91 countries and sales to date have hit over and above 900,000," he adds. Having revolutionised the mid-sized 4x4 sector in 1989, its no surprise that the Discovery evolved to reflect the needs and tastes of its increasingly urbane and discerning buyers. By 1994 range-topping Discovery models featured leather upholstery and wood veneer trim, and when the Series II Discovery was introduced in 1998 it added a sophisticated new heating, air-conditioning and ventilation system for increased comfort in all climates. Todays Discovery 4 continues that ethos of evolution to winning effect: Its strikingly architectural interior design, clear-yet-stylish dashboard, user-friendly features and luxurious interior creating an attractive, well-appointed and practical environment for driver and passengers alike. The Discovery will be forever renowned for its legendary exterior shape which to this day still continues the stepped roof and asymmetric rear glass theme, giving all occupants a clear view of the journey ahead. To provide a contemporary edge to the interior design, Land Rover turned to the Conran Design Studio who for many years have been held in high regard for influencing 'modern day living'.
