Many people fantasize about leaving the stresses of an urban world behind. Miriam Lancewood and her husband have taken this wish to an extreme, having spent the last seven years living in the wilderness. 9 Days - From My Window in Aleppo

Winner of the European Short Film Award at the European Film Awards. In August 2012, Syrian photographer Issa Touma awoke to the dawn of the rebel uprising in the city of Aleppo. "Strangers take position in my street.” he says, “they look unprepared, without any kind of war experience". Young men in t-shirts, resembling students more than fighters, drag sandbags into a blockade below Touma's window. A rebel appeals by loudspeaker to a regime soldier, "leave your post and come to us!". He is answered by the sound of gunfire. Touma's raw commentary and eye for photographic detail give an unprecedented glimpse into the beginnings of a war that rages to this day. Protecting this 3000-year-old language has united Malulas residents: Christians and Muslims are like brothers in this town, says local resident Ibrahim Kamar. Whilst Mel Gibsons The Passion of Christ has revived interest in the language, fears that Aramaic is dying out continue. Malula, where the orphans must recite in Aramaic, is one of the last bastions for a language Mother Superior Savaf describes as a gift from God. Produced by ABC Australia. In Singapore SkyGreen offers one example of how this might be possible, "not just technically, but economically". By increasing their food security while reducing the impact of food production on global climate change, SkyGreen is 10 times more productive per square foot than conventional farming. Jennifer Clement, explains, "The estimated value of our house went to 120,000 U.S. dollars within a month. But 15 hour school days and academic pressure on students are beginning to take its toll, and the authorities are finally taking notice. "You get compared and because everyone does so well I feel pressured to do better. There's a lot of psychological pressure", says one Korean student. Here, making it to the top has become a national obsession. Schools stay open until 11pm, whilst half of teenagers report suicidal thoughts, mostly blaming school pressure. 19-year-old Jae-woo describes the stresses that accompany study for exams: "There's no me... I can't do things I like. When I'm prepping for exams, who I am just gets lost". Feeding off the system are entrepreneurs like Cha Gil-yong, a celebrity teacher who dons wigs and wacky costumes in online lectures. At any one time 300,000 students are logged into his website. "I try to entertain them and keep them from nodding off by wearing these wigs. Students really enjoy it", he says. Now, authorities are finally realising that the price of success may be too great, and are sending out patrols to enforce school closing times. Yet top performing students are even beginning to have plastic surgery in order to improve their job prospects. In a country where failure is not an option, how far will students go for success? A chief worry is hygiene. 8-year-old Jessica lives with her mother in a cubicle too small to let a grown man stand. She points to the only toilet on their floor: "I hate it. Skull and Bones - USA

11:38
September 2002 This feature charts the history of secret Yale society 'Skull and Bones', which grants members lifelong access to power and privilege. Like other secret societies, 'Skull and Bones' has spawned many rumours about its arcane rituals and concern about the veiled access to power it offers. "Skull and Bones is a Free-masonic association. You could call it a death cult," says commentator W. Tarpley. The society meets in the 'tomb', a crypt-like building where skeletons are kept. Novices have bags placed over their heads, and have to swear an oath of secrecy. Founded in the 1830's, the elite institution has been the springboard for Presidents, tycoons and CIA men alike. Members have included the most powerful American families: the Tafts, Harrimans and Rockefellers. Today its most famous alumni are George W. Bush, whose father, grandfather and many other relatives were members, Bush's likely challenger at the next Presidential election. All deny it. Other Bonesmen helped fund George W. Bush's rise to power, yet he claims he doesn't even know if the society still exists. But his alleged association with the society raises doubts as to the viability of his position: "They swear to take care of each others' interests. When one of them becomes president of the United States, then it's time to ask questions," comments Professor R Bunch. This report tracks down former members to try and fill in the blanks and examines whether we should worry about the influence of secret societies on the world's most powerful democracy.

Racing to stay ahead of the world economy, is the superpower about to implode? "There are around 64 million empty apartments in China," claims analyst Gillem Tulloch. It's all part of the Chinese government's efforts to keep its economy booming and there are plenty of people who would love to move in, but the properties are priced out of the market. It's after 2pm and in the new city of Dongguan shop owner Tian Yu Gao is yet to serve a single customer. "It's a bit boring," he sighs. His open shop is a rare sight in the Great Mall: once heralded by the New York Times as proof of China's astonishing consumer culture, today it is an eerie vista of emptiness. "It can't stay this way," insists Tulloch, "when the bubble bursts, it will impoverish vast numbers of people". Our changing diet has had a variety of effects on our health, not least on our ‘microbiome’; diversity in the bacteria living inside us has decreased dramatically, with severe knock-on effects on our immune systems. Orcas Co-Exist With Norway's Arctic Fishermen

Ensuring that no orcas are captured in his nets "is the biggest challenge" he faces. Budiman Sudjatmiko And His Fight For Democracy In Indonesia (1997)

17:14
An Activist Silenced (1997): Increasing numbers of Indonesians are daring to oppose the government despite the harsh penalties. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Synopsis: Democracy in 90's Indonesia is flawed to say the least. Despite holding elections, alleged corruption, as well as control over the media and judicial system, undermine the country's claims to a free society. An interview conducted by an ABC journalist, asking Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana, daughter of President Surhato and ruling Golkar Party's star campaigner, makes front pages the next day - evidence of a country whose journalists do not ask politicians tough questions. Yet despite widespread government control, dissent is brewing. 27 year old Budiman Sudjatmlko's story epitomises the growing opposition to Surharto's rule as well as the fate which awaits those who speak out. In his final courtroom appearance Budiman gives a dramatic and colourful performance to a packed gallery of family and supporters. Handing out flowers to the judges of his case, he announces his lack of faith in the Indonesian justice system. Budiman's parents watch from the public gallery as, instead of making a plea, Budiman reads a four hour critique of the government. Only the judges, in danger of falling asleep, and the prosecution remain unmoved. Back in court to hear his sentence he refuses to stay to hear the verdict, but a verdict is given nonetheless - 13 years imprisonment. Before being escorted away in a police vehicle, he climbs on top of it in a defiant show of bravado. Yet it is not only radicals like Budiman who oppose the government. The Muslim based PPP, the de-facto opposition in the country, believe they have been marginalised by the Surhato regime. ABC Australia reports from Jakarta, conducting interviews with Rukmana and Budiman. Welcome to M*A*S*H 2010, where a brave medical team are on 24 hour alert. "We're the busiest Forward Surgical Team in Iraq and Afghanistan". In the next moment, the alarm sounds and the medivac helicopter is taking off. "Is it a US...an Afghan...a child?", asks the pilot, as a giant smoke cloud from an exploded mine-resistant vehicle comes into view. Two American soldiers have been killed and three wounded by an IED. What Does Umberto Eco Think About Art in the Internet Age?

As his new book, '‘The Vertigo of Lists',’ is released in 10 languages, he also takes on the honoured role of guest curator at the Louvre. Eco’'s book is about enumeration -– lists without a system. Eco believes the world is saturated with infinite lists, found in everything from classic literature, to shop windows: "“The window-display is a long, enticing list, designed to make us want to buy."” Now Eco has taken on the curator’'s role at the Louvre. "Museums also illustrate enumeration perfectly. Each museum is a huge row of separate pieces seemingly without order, except to the curator." But all these catalogues have been torn apart by the mass of information we call the internet. “"It is the list to end all lists. It is an infinite collection of data. And it has one thing in common with all lists: total disorder.”" Raros Media – Ref. 4630 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. As communities back home struggle to cope with the exodus, where does the future for Moldova lie? Since 2014, Moldovans have moved freely within the EU, prompting a sharp rise in economic migration. Raya is one of the 40,000 Moldovans supporting her family from France. "I’ve found cleaning work...that’s how I earn my daily bread", she says. The money earned by those like Raya now accounts for 25% of Moldova's GDP - "without money from abroad", says Raya's mother, "we wouldn’t be able to survive". Yet communities have been left desolate by the exodus, and child trafficking is rife amongst youngsters with absent parents. Dan, whose parents left him in a children's home to work abroad, is grateful: "It was more difficult before; we didn’t have any money at all. Now, since they went away, life seems easier". Yet with the future of migration in the EU unclear, will the sacrifice have been worthwhile? Shin's most vivid memory of his life in the camp is the constant hunger he felt, 'food made me escape, even if it was going to cost me my life. The only thing that interested me was the food.' Before his escape three years ago, he didn't even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. 'My mother was supposed to inform on me and me on her'. He believed she deserved her fate as he witnessed her execution. 'I blamed her. I had no real feelings as a kid'. Shin didn't know love, only violence. 'Once the guards beat a little girl on the head so hard, she died the next day'. He eventually escaped through a gap in a high-voltage fence. His charred legs still bear the scars. As horrible as it is, Shin's story is not unique. Wang, himself a former prisoner, is a prominent writer on the subject. He believes that oppression in North Korea will keep increasing: 'The brutality of the system has grown to the point where Kim Jong Il now fears that he will suffer the same fate as Caucescu of Romania. Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines

Gold Dust: Under Blaise Compaore's leadership, Burkina Faso's unregulated gold rush has had a devastating effect on mining conditions. This report digs deep into the industry, exposing the corruption beneath Compaore's ruling. Millions of people - including children as young as fourteen - mine in an unregulated industry for a few golden grams of hope. Marcel toils underground to support his family - but without the glittering rewards promised. “We all have hope, we hope to earn” he says, but "they rob us here...They treat the miner like an animal." 17-year old Soumaele has been mining for two years. His thin body can go to even deeper than the older men, to places where the air is impossible to breathe and the tunnels are likely to collapse. Gold promises a great deal, but in an anarchic industry, teacher Soungalo Hema fears for the future of children like Soumaele: "You try and save them", she says, "but a lot of the time it’s in vain. Trouble in Paradise as the Cook Islands Struggle With Debt

14:47
Heaven on Earth? (March 1997) A disturbing report on how islanders found themself struggling for survival after foreigners bought their country's main assets. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# After years of borrowing, the government found itself with debts beyond its capacity. Fed up with bankrolling its former colony, New Zealand finally pulled the economic plug. Cook Islands' Prime Minister, Sir Geoffrey Henry denies embezzlement after the collapse of the Sheraton Hotel project, doubling the national debt. To recoup finance, the government laid off state workers and offloaded its most saleable assets to the highest bidders, invariably outsiders. Local businessman Norm Mitchell complains that he was never even given a chance to buy the Aitutaki Hotel. Intimidated by the authorities, his business partners are too frightened to appear before the camera. After losing his state job, Matunga turned to carving ukuleles for tourists. But when this failed to bring in enough money he decided to emigrate to Australia. But not all islanders feel the same: after 25 years in a government office, Nani feels liberated by her new job as tourist guide. But the rest of the population struggles to survive without the state wage which was once taken for granted. They are the legion of military 'fakers' who have emerged since 9/11 - a phenomenon reaching the highest levels of US politics. "I spent a third of my life in the marine core. It was everything I knew, everything I loved." A charismatic Rick Duncan tells the story that captivated America at a high-profile event for the Colorado Veterans Alliance. A hero dodging bullets and losing buddies on three tours of Iraq, collecting shrapnel he calls "internal body bling", and garnering some of the highest military medals possible. Yet he had bought his medals, and cut and pasted his stories, from the internet. He played an important role in supporting veterans in the 2008 Presidential campaign. Yet veteran Dan Warvi says that it took him six hours on the internet to realise that "Rick was a complete fraud". When veteran Doug Sternum realised that one man had stolen the identity of his deceased best friend, he made it his mission to hunt down people like Rick: "I get overwhelmed by the amount of imposters". Despite serious penalties and 6 months jail time for faking military service, or wearing honours not won in battle, more and more imposters continue to be revealed in what has become a highly emotional witch hunt: "This isn't a fuckin' computer game - this is for real!" The 1997 Famine That Still Affects North Korea Today

22:04
Famine (1997): Incredible insight into North Korea's nationwide famine in which left thousands on the brink of starvation. Despite the need for international aid, the lack of access to the country made implementation an impossible task. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Negotiations between CARE and the government Relief Committee are fraught. The Relief Committee complain CARE is not helping enough. The obsessively secretive government wants to direct all aid to the fertile rice bowl areas around the capital, because productivity here is highest. Then they will be able to feed the starving in the country's north. Williamson disagrees and is granted a rare permit to travel north to judge for himself. The team break the schedule and visit a nursery of their choosing. Here the hungry children are lacklustre and silent. Officially banned from filming in hospitals, desperate doctors allow the camera in. Hungry mothers are supposed to supply food for their children. A family with no men starve more than their more productive neighbours. If you don't work, it seems, you don't eat. This is no socialist famine. The government says the north is not a farming area and shouldn't get aid first. CARE says aid should go to the starving. But ten years after on, the worst is yet to come. Since the 2007 sub-prime crisis, an exodus of families ruined by the banks has drained Cleveland's life-blood. Communities declined and family homes are now scarred by the evidence of violent crime. Like many Cleveland residents, politician Jim Rokakis felt helpless against the power of global markets: “A lot of us raised our voices and we screamed and we waved and we said there’s a train wreck coming. Well the train wreck came”. The city has changed beyond recognition. As Police Chief Brandon Kutz says, "We’ve had a lot of homicides this year, we’ve had a lot of people shot. We’ve had a lot of citizens afraid and scared. It’s a serious issue”. Those who remain have few choices. Homes are worthless, and long-gone owners are stalked for maintenance costs they can't afford. Resident Stephanie Benifield says, "People are dying and people are just abandoning the homes", because "they can’t afford the homes and the upkeep." For Rokakis, the fight against the banks has been lost. "This was a war", he said. "We lost the war and what we’re doing now... this clean-up is basically burying the dead”. "Nobody is having babies. The men aren't as hungry for success or for relationships as they were before", says Kaoru Arai. She epitomises the country's new breed of successful and financially independent women that are putting their career first. "I'm picky, yes. I want it all", she smiles. In a desperate move to pull the birth rate back from the brink, the government is offering cash incentives to encourage singles to partner up and procreate. Meanwhile, the elderly are being left behind, with no one to look after them. Japan's seemingly xenophobic reluctance to admit foreign workers means that major companies are now racing to develop robots to help fill the void and support its ageing population. Somewhat desperate measures, which reveal how difficult the problem has become for the government to handle. Where Did A Million Chinese Millionaires Come From?

26:20
The Ka-Ching Dynasty! - China. From communism to capitalism, a new generation of very young, very rich people have emerged, but where did they come from? Subscribe to journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures The economic transformation of China has been electrifying. But with Europe teetering and the US plodding, can the biggest tiger of all keep on roaring? China's super-rich certainly think they can. Outside a private Beijing nightclub Porsches, Maseratis and Ferraris compete for space. Inside the club is packed with the children of China's super-rich enjoying a 'palace' themed party. China now has almost a million millionaires, six hundred billionaires, and the numbers keep growing at a staggering rate. As a reporter for the Hurun Report rich-list points out, they are a force to be reckoned with: "certainly we need to be aware of and understand this group." Even more striking is the bravado of China's super-rich, who feel that they can keep going from strength to strength. "I met an entrepreneur last week who said that if all goes to plan, in ten years time his business will be ten times the size it is now". The focus is certainly on quick growth. Current projections say that in ten years time half the world's billionaires will come from China. While there are warnings signs that the economic woes of Europe and the US will hit China, China's super-rich don't seem concerned. For some the hope is that the Chinese market will pick up the slack. For others, who have only known the good times, anything else is unthinkable: "if I have any spare money I buy sports cars." But in the current financial climate, for some Americans this isn't just a superstore; it's a place to call home. "Anybody can go homeless. Everybody is one step away actually." Joe is one of tens of thousands of people taking advantage of a little-publicised Walmart policy that allows travellers to pull up in their car parks and stay the night for free. He has lived in the Walmart car park for the past seven years. Since the housing crisis began, makeshift Walmart communities are attracting Americans from all walks of life. With well over a million on the streets these car park shelters are rapidly being accepted by local authorities. "I'd rather have them in a Walmart parking lot than out by the side of the road or off the highway somewhere where they're not as well protected", says the mayor of Flagstaff, Arizona. Yet as the shelters become a permanent fixture, many are getting stuck in the system. "A lot of them are stuck now; they've gone through their resources", says social worker Richard Durfresne. But now, a new initiative by gang members is seeing them make and deliver free sandwiches children who would otherwise go without. "It gives you a reason to get up the next day", explains Pink. We are looking at life in kindergarten… Danish-style. If you’re the kind of parent who keeps a close eye on your kids in the playground, Denmark’s forest kindergarten will come as a rude shock - they do things differently here. Johan says he’s watching from a distance. So what happens if he thinks the children are doing something dangerous? “I sometimes close my eyes, because I know I have to stop something, but I can also stand and watch it a little bit first because I think it’s exciting. And I can understand why they do it,” he says. Whether he’s throwing rocks into the fjord with a bunch of enthusiastic three year-olds, or abseiling down a muddy slope with some determined five year-olds, Johan clearly gets a vicarious buzz from their juvenile thrill-seeking. “It’s not dangerous in my opinion. And if you don’t get a little bit of danger, what’s life worth living? Everybody needs a little bit of kick sometimes.” At the heart of what makes Danish kindergartens so special is one word – pedagogy. In Denmark, and in many other parts of Europe, ‘pedagogy’ is an everyday word for something that’s much more holistic than ‘teaching’. It’s something that applies from cradle-to-grave – anyone in Denmark working with young children, or the mentally ill, or the elderly, requires a university degree in pedagogy. Forsaking easy explanations of greedy bankers and incompetent regulators, this investigation goes to the root causes of the USA’s and UK’s deluded belief that everyone could be rich and property prices would rise forever. It asks the question: why are the perpetrators of the mess now entrusted with the lucrative task of clearing it up? “It’s the very interesting question of how was the American elite able to get away with it?” In 2007, income inequality in the United States hit higher levels than before the Great Depression in 1929. In that year 15,000 Americans earned $700 billion between them. The top 10% of American society earn 50% of total income. Since 2009, income inequality in America has continued to rise. Some of the world’s most eminent economists, including Joseph Stiglitz, Robert Wade, Louis Hyman, and Robert Shiller offer their perspectives on what brought about the crash and the enormous inequality present in American society today. “So while the top was not willing to pay the bottom wages. They were willing to lend them money”. The free market ideology of Alan Greenspan and others led them to believe that everybody could always be better off. The spread of people affected by the crash, and the irresponsible loans issued, was vast. From New York Time journalists, to opticians, to labourers, the stories roll in of people who had been sold packaged lies promising them endless house price rises. But rather than focus on the obvious targets, The Flaw burrows to the root of the problem. “It’s a debt crisis, but it’s also very much a crisis of economic theory”. What becomes apparent is that built into the modern economic system is an instrument that at one point in America saw “a transfer upwards of roughly $1.5 trillion each year to the top 1%”. Greenspan himself is forced to admit that there is a “flaw in the model that I perceived as the critical functioning structure that defines how the world works”. The Flaw is a call for a return to a form of capitalism that allows for all to benefit. If it does not, then the system as we know it is doomed.
