PLS-4: PL/SQL Variables

24:47
For Full Course Experience Please Go To http://mentorsnet.org/course_preview?course_id=5 Full Course Experience Includes 1. Access to course videos and exercises 2. View & manage your progress/pace 3. In-class projects and code reviews 4. Personal guidance from your Mentors ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A variable is nothing but a name given to a storage area that our programs can manipulate. Each variable in PL/SQL has a specific data type, which determines the size and layout of the variable's memory; the range of values that can be stored within that memory and the set of operations that can be applied to the variable. The name of a PL/SQL variable consists of a letter optionally followed by more letters, numerals, dollar signs, underscores, and number signs and should not exceed 30 characters. By default, variable names are not case-sensitive. You cannot use a reserved PL/SQL keyword as a variable name. PL/SQL programming language allows to define various types of variables, which we will cover in subsequent chapters like date time data types, records, collections, etc. For this chapter, let us study only basic variable types. With PL/SQL you can declare variables and then use them in SQL and procedural statements anywhere that an expression can be used. Variables can be used for the following: • Temporary storage of data: Data can be temporarily stored in one or more variables for use when validating data input and for processing later in the data flow process. • Manipulation of stored values: Variables can be used for calculations and other data manipulations without accessing the database. • Reusability: After they are declared, variables can be used repeatedly in an application simply by referencing them in other statements, including other declarative statements. • Ease of maintenance: When using %TYPE and %ROWTYPE (more information on %ROWTYPE is covered in a subsequent lesson), you declare variables, basing the declarations on the definitions of database columns. If an underlying definition changes, the variable declaration changes accordingly at run time. This provides data independence, reduces maintenance costs, and allows programs to adapt as the database changes to meet new business needs. More information on %TYPE is covered later in this lesson. Types of Variables" All PL/SQL variables have a data type, which specifies a storage format, constraints, and valid range of values. PL/SQL supports four data type categories—scalar, composite, reference, and LOB (large object)—that you can use for declaring variables, constants, and pointers. • Scalar data types hold a single value. The main data types are those that correspond to column types in Oracle server tables; PL/SQL also supports Boolean variables. • Composite data types, such as records, allow groups of fields to be defined and manipulated in PL/SQL blocks. • Reference data types hold values, called pointers, that designate other program items. Reference data types are not covered in this course. • LOB data types hold values, called locators, that specify the location of large objects (such as graphic images) that are stored out of line. LOB data types are discussed in detail later in this course.

HP High Performance Database Solution offers Open Alternative to Oracle Exadata

02:53
Using flash memory arrays to build high performance database solutions provides lower latency and higher IOPS for significant increases in performance. HP offers their High Performance Database Solution built around the DL980 G7 server and Violin Memory 3200 solid state storage arrays as a direct alternative to the far more expensive Oracle Exadata. One key difference of the HP High Performance Database Solution is the open archetecture, which allows you to use the hardware with Linux or Windows and any version of Oracle, not just the latest version supported by Exadata. While the configuration is a reference architecture for Oracle databases, the platform also works with other database vendors as well, including EnterpriseDB PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server. Here I talk with Michael St-Jean from HP at Oracle Open World about high performance database solutions and how HP provides flexibility for database performance.

Comparing DBA Productivity: An Oracle/DB2 Task Complexity Study

04:27
Triton Consulting conducted an objective assessment of the complexity of several routine DBA activities, comparing Oracle Database 11gR2 and DB2 9.7. This study examined the following common DBA activities, and assessed the complexity of each within an Oracle Database and DB2 for LUW environment: 1 - Installation 2 - Enabling table compression 3 - Enabling index compression 4 - Backup and recovery 5 - Automatic memory tuning 6 - Data access control Each of these activities were broken down into a number of more detailed steps, which were subjected to complexity analysis using the methodology described in the video. This presentation presents the high-level results and conclusions from the complexity analysis. For further details, including a detailed breakdown of the individual task complexity scores for each activity, please refer to the full Triton Consulting report entitled "Triton Consulting: Quantitative Complexity Analysis" at: https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/signup.do?lang=en_US&source=sw-infomgt&S_PKG=analyst-db2_oracle_triton

Calpont InfiniDB 2.0 Benchmark Review with Bert Scalzo

09:37
This is an overview of benchmark test results between Calpont InfiniDB 2.0 and a leading row-based database. The results were published in January 2010 in the paper titled, "Data Warehouse Benchmark: Comparing Calpont InfiniDB® and a Row-based Database." The benchmark test's author, Bert Scalzo, a database expert and Oracle ACE who has published several books, articles and speaks on subject of data warehouse design and performance provides a narrative and highlights of the performance results. The environment simulated several different user types with a mix of data analysis, query and reporting needs. The dimension tables ranged in size from several thousand to several million rows, and the largest fact table had nearly 40 billion rows with a total raw data size being about 2 terabytes. The testing was performed across two different server environments and architectures to ensure the hardware did not play a significant role in the results.
