The classical orders

11:08
A conversation with Dr. Steven Zucker & Dr. Beth Harris In classical architecture, the Orders consist of variations of an assembly of parts made up of a column (usually with a base), a capital, and an entablature. These structural units may be repeated and combined to form the elevation of a building and its architectural vocabulary. There are eight Orders in total: Doric (Greek and Roman versions), Tuscan, Ionic (Greek and Roman), Corinthian (Greek and Roman), and Composite. The simplest is the Tuscan, supposedly derived from the Etruscan-type temple. It has a base and capital and a plain column. The Doric is probably earlier, however, its Greek version having no base, as on the Parthenon. The Ionic Order, with its twin volute capitals, originated in Asia Minor in the mid-6th century B.C.E. The Corinthian Order was an Athenian invention of the 5th century B.C.E. and was later developed by the Romans. The Composite Order is a late Roman combination of elements from the Ionic and Corinthian Orders. The Making of a Roman Silver Cup

Ancient Roman silversmiths developed their craft to the highest levels of refinement and beauty. Applying fire and basic tools to the shaping of precious metals, many of their sophisticated techniques are still used today. Roman Military Technology and Tactics

11:03
Subscribe to Naked Science – http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare... 2000 years ago the Roman army is the best equipped army in the world. While architects have mastered the art of manipulating stone and concrete, military engineers have fashioned metal and wood to create devastating weapons of war. The Roman foot soldiers main weapon is a fearsome sword called the Gladius, a double edged blade with a sharp point used for stabbing and thrusting, rather than slashing. When not fighting at close quarters, their spear, called a pilum, could kill from a distance with lethal accuracy. Protecting soldiers from injury is just as important as arming them for attack. Early Roman soldiers wear chainmail, but armourers come up with a far superior form of protection. Articulated plate armour called lorica segmentata, made from overlapping iron plates joined together by leather straps, as flexible as chainmail, but one third lighter. If the romans weaponry has a modern feel, then so does the tactics they use. The Roman legions know exactly how to fight heavily armed foes. They use the testudo, Latin for tortoise. Legionaries bunch together and lock their shields in formation to create a protective screen, a formation as effective in attack, as it is in defence. Few examples of Roman artillery survive, but they left detailed clues as to how to recreate them. The Ermine Street Guard Roman Reenactment Society is dedicated to research into the Roman Army and the reconstruction of Roman armour and equipment. The scorpion fires iron tipped bolts, used in the first stages of attack and during sieges. It fires arrows at incredible speeds, pierces armour, and kills instantly, a bit like a giant crossbow. Although an effective anti-personnel weapon, the scorpion is of little use when attacking a building. For that the Romans need something with a bit more punch, the onager and the ballista. These pieces of artillery fire large stones at the enemy. During sieges they propel projectiles so high into the air that they can break down enemy walls. The whizzing noise of the stones strikes terror into Rome’s enemies. To increase the fear factor they’re painted black so harder to see. The ballista works like the scorpion, but is bigger and more powerful. It can fire a 60 pound stone or a 3 foot bolt around 15,000 feet allowing the soldiers to stand well away from enemy archers. The speed of the missile is phenomenal hitting its target at about 115 mph, anyone sustaining a direct hit would be killed instantly. The onager uses a different principle, it catapults basketball sized stones nearly 100 feet using a single arm and sling. The vertical arm is powered by a large horizontal skein of rope, coiled and twisted to create a rotational force, the skein acts like a spring storing energy to be released on firing. The combination of technology and tactics makes the Roman army the premier fighting force in Europe for 500 years and influences military tactics for the next 1,500. Viking Art - 1 Broa-Oseberg Style

01:40
First video about the Viking Art serie. Any doubt? Send me a message. Historia del Arte: https://namerethistoriadelarte.blogspot.com.es/ Land of the Art: https://www.facebook.com/landoftheart The Viking Art is developed in the Nordic countries and their areas of influence during the Viking era, between the VIII and XII centuries. It is part of the german zoomorphic style, developed from late Roman art influences, Celtic art, and motifs of the peoples of the steppes of Asia. Most of the best examples since the beginning of the Viking Age have been found in tombs, especially jewelry and weapons, while later the Viking Art is better represented in silver objects, in the development of cities, scandinavian and rune stones. Broa-Oseberg Style. From second half VIII century to half IX century. It takes the name from the tomb of a man in Broa, Gotland, Sweden, and the tomb of a woman in Oseberg, Norway. In Broa there were bronze pieces. In Oseberg was found the richest viking tomb. The woman was in a ornamented ship with funerary offerings. Animal era in ornamentation, with beasts. Oseberg Ship: a oak ship. Decorated with zoomorphic details with a post with dragon head. It had two skeletons, one to a woman of 70 years old and other of 30 years old. The identities are unknown, but there are some theories, since it can be the queen Åsa Haraldsdottir to a priestess, being the young one a person sacrified to accompany the other high rank person. There it was found also a chariot and a bed. Other decorative works: more pieces with zoomorphic and vegetal motifs. What is vaporwave? What is a e s t h e t i c? How do you vaporwave? I take a look at the history and origin of the internet music and art style that has become a meme. Macintosh plus album art has become iconic for the genre. Vaporwave and aesthetic stylized as a e s t h e t i c is a popular genre of music and art style here on the internet, they have merged to become one popular sub genre that people enjoy. They have influenced other areas of the internet due to their popularity. Recently people have been wondering what the genre is all about so I attempt to explain and define the elements that make up the sometimes confusing music and art. Viking Art - 5 Ringerike Style

Fifth video about the Viking Art serie. Most of the best examples since the beginning of the Viking Age have been found in tombs, especially jewelry and weapons, while later the Viking Art is better represented in silver objects, in the development of cities, scandinavian and rune stones. Ringerike Style. From XI century to second half XI century. Expansion of the tradition of runestones. The name is taken from an archeological site. This style has animals, and plant decoration well definited or geometric figures that surround the animal figure of more size. Lions and birds, usually crowned. Decoration in cross-shape. Symmetry is important. Söderala Weathervane: it was a copper piece that later was goldened, probably used in the prow of a drakkar o similar ship. Well decorated with animal forms. Other two examples of these pieces are the Källunge weathervane and the Heggen weathervane. Vang Stone: it was in the exterior of the Vang Stavkirke, that was translated to Poland along with the stone. It is a blackboard irregular stone with bands, leaves and a lion. Runestone of the St. Paul Churchyard in London: it was identified as a viking sepulchre tombstone. It has a lion and a serpent fighting, with runic inscriptions in the exterior edge. It has rests of polychromy, so it was painted. Runestones of Greece: they are mostly in Sweden and they talk about travels the scandinavian people did to the roman byzantine empire. The runestones have inscriptions with words related with Greece. Varangian Runestones: these ones talk about travels to the east of Scandinavia like the current Russia or Ukraina. There are other runestones about travels to Italy but not very important. Best Viking Art website: http://viking.archeurope.info/ Music: Fehu by Wardruna Photos taken in Google images. Thin animal figures with slender extremities, long neck and stylized head, with almond-shaped eyes. Also animals like serpents or dragons. Asymmetry. Interlaced patters in thin lines in S or 8 form. Urnes: the decoration of this stavkirke is what seems a serpents and an animal below. It is interpreted as fight between good and evil, but also the fight between the dragon Nidhogg, gnawing the roots of Yggdrasill. It has relation with the anglosaxon and celtic manuscripts, like the Gospel of Lindisfarne. Early Urnes: here are the England runestones and the Orkesta runestones. Also the Lingsberg runestones. Mid-Urnes: some moneys and wood tables. I couldn’t find any image. Late Urnes: extremely thin animals and circular drawings. Uppland runestone and Jarlabanke runestones. Urnes-romanesque: the tradition of runestone dissappeared. Golden Altar of Lisbjerg in Denmark. Fourth video about the Viking Art serie. Mammen Style. From end X century to beginning XI century. The name is due to discoveries in a funerary chamber in Jutland, Denmark. Appear animals in spiral forms and plant decoration. Mammen Axe: one of the most important manifestations. Appear a figure of a bird and a human face. Cunegunda chest: richly decorated in walrus ivory. Cammin chest: a replica of the dissappeared chest. Jelling Runestones: these are the runestones of Gorm the Old. They have inscriptions. Harald Blåtand Runestone: it has color, and you see a human in plant decoration. People's Palaces - The Golden Age of Civic Architecture: Neo Classical [BBC, Full Documentary]

59:08
Architectural historian Dr Jonathan Foyle explores some of the best Georgian and Victorian neo-classical civic buildings in the north of England. He visits town halls, concert halls, libraries, schools and galleries in Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester and Todmorden in an unlikely story of rivalry, ambition and power in the service of social responsibility. Neo-classicism harked back to Rome, democratic Athens and the Greek city-state. The regular proportion, geometry and symmetry of classical temple-style architecture suggested order in chaotically-expanding urban environments and served to associate towns regarded as squalid and unruly with the cultured ancient civilisations of antiquity. These were buildings constructed with the aim of elevating the towns in which they stood.

How to make 2,000-year-old-bread

06:52
In AD 79, a baker put his loaf of bread into the oven. Nearly 2,000 years later it was found during excavations in Herculaneum. The British Museum asked Giorgio Locatelli to recreate the recipe as part of his culinary investigations for the cinema production 'Pompeii Live from the British Museum'. In response to the many interesting, thoughtful and sometimes amusing comments we've received for this video, we've asked Paul Roberts, the curator of our Pompeii exhibition 'Life and Death in Herculaneum', to give us the academic background: It was one of the Romans’ great boasts at table that they could serve white flour bread at fine banquets (at normal tables they might well have eaten poorer grades of wheat or other grains, such as spelt or barley, and even beans, lentils or chestnuts.) You will see that Giorgio scores the loaf: I’ve examined lots of the loaves and I am convinced that they are scored. It's important to remember that the loaves survived because they were carbonised. They have, in effect, shrunk somewhat from their original form, because of the loss of liquid on exposure to the sudden blast of heat form Vesuvius – conservatively estimated at 400 degrees centigrade. All other foodstuffs – figs, beans, grain etc are noticeably smaller than they ought to be – and there is no reason the same shouldn’t be true of bread. This could explain why the scoring and the stamp seem implausibly clear – in effect they may have contracted to a smaller (and in the case of the stamp, more legible) form. This carbonisation must, I think, be taken into account and means the loaves when complete and fresh from the oven may have looked very different from how we see them now – not just in colour. Art history students explore Rome's story

03:02
In mid-May, an experiential art history course took a group of 12 Rice students on a three-week exploration of Rome, the Italian capital whose history spans more than 2,500 years. The students’ experiences in images and words are now on display in “Rome 2016: A HART in the World Student Exhibition” in Herring Hall’s first-floor gallery walkway. “When I was in middle school, I made a bucket list, and on the bucket list was to go to Rome,” said Marley Foster, a Wiess College junior majoring in English and visual and dramatic arts, who curated the exhibit with her peers. “I got here (to Rice), and they had a class that was going to Rome. It is a place and a history and a mythology that I’ve always been interested in.” Indeed, the very stones of some of the roads the students walked upon were laid under emperors who ruled millennia in the past, and they bore the footsteps of iconic figures such as Julius Caesar, Michelangelo and Pier Luigi Nervi. The course was part of the HART in the World program, an art history initiative established by former department chair Linda Neagley, an associate professor of art history. The program covers airfare and lodging for students to travel to a different city each year with department faculty.
