Last week, Coca-Cola’s Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President Marcos de Quinto unveiled the company’s new ‘One Brand’ global marketing strategy at a glitzy event held in Dubai. The bold new campaign, with the tagline ‘Taste the Feeling’, unites Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Light/Diet Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero under the iconic Coca-Cola brand. “We are planning many big things, not just within Coca-Cola, but within the other [company] brands, and this is just a first step,” de Quinto explained to Adlip. During his presentation, de Quinto made reference to Disney and praised the success and longevity of the much-loved brand. “I really admire the work that [Disney] have done,” adds de Quinto, pointing out how consistent and steady the brand has remained over the years. He notes that erratic behaviour really leads to ‘disengaged consumers’ for brands. He highlights the importance of keeping Coca-Cola one brand, and not slicing it into too many different parts. That said, the various brands within the Coca-Cola stable ‘must share the same values and benefits’, says de Quinto. Taste the Feeling… “’Taste’ makes reference to the unique taste of Coca-Cola, and ‘feeling’ talks to the emotion – so with this tagline we are merging both things - brand values and product benefits,” explains de Quinto.

But let’s delve into Coca Cola the stock and whether it’s a good place to invest our money in 2018. *About Coca-Cola* • They own 500 different brands. • Sell over 3,500 different beverages • They own 4 out of the top 5 soft drinks in the world. • Basically, a gigantic beverage company. *How Coca-Cola Make Money* • Through sales of their finished product = 60% of their revenue. • Through sale of soda syrup = 40% of their revenue. *Coca-Cola Fundamentals* • Price = $44.53 • EPS = $0.29 • P/E Ratio = 152.50 • Dividends = $1.56 • P/BV = 11.14 (higher than the industry P/BV) • Industry P/BV = 8.65 • Earnings decreased from $7.35 billion in 2015 to $1.25 billion in 2017. And yes I know that the 4th quarter earnings results are an anomaly but even then I’m not impressed with coca cola’s figures. *My Opinion* • Coca Cola shares are way overpriced. I don’t see why a company is priced so high when their earnings and revenue are decreasing. It’s not even close to a growing company. I guess people just see the brand Coca Cola and think it’s a good investment without going into the fundamentals and other features of the stock. London born, Australia-raised singer Conrad Sewell was in Paris today to launch the new anthem for Coca-Cola, “Taste the Feeling’. The anthem is part of a brand new Coca-Cola ‘One Brand’ global marketing strategy that, for the first time ever, unites Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Light/Diet Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero, and Coca-Cola Life under the iconic Coca-Cola brand positioning in one global creative campaign, “Taste the Feeling”. “Taste the Feeling” features the studio wizardry of Swedish DJ, artist and producer. A first acoustic version by Sewell is being featured in various TV spots for the new campaign and the lead single with Avicii will be released soon. Sewell, an Australian based singer, currently living in Los Angeles, was featured in the Kygo’s breakout 2015 single “Firestone," which produced 300 million Spotify streams and 3 million-plus worldwide sales. Conrad has also toured with a number of notable artists such as Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5 and more recently Jess Glynne. Grammy-nominated Avicii is best known for his work with Aloe Blacc on “Wake Me Up,”feel-good theme “Levels” and dance anthem “Hey Brother.” Avicii also collaborated with Wyclef Jean and Carlos Santana to create the official FIFA 2014 World Cup Anthem, “Dar um Jeito (We Will Find a Way).” Avicii has appeared in the top 10 of DJ Mag’s ‘Top 100 DJ’s’ rankings every year since 2011, reaching number 3 in both 2011 and 2012. And this is what is commonly referred to as an iconic brand. So in other words there are great brands out there, lots of brands, but there are relatively few that are able to maintain a point of view on the changing times around them. So if you think about it Coke has always had a point of view on society. So in the early '60s when there was a lot of cultural change they had a point of view on race relationships. And remember the Mean Joe Greene commercial where Mean Joe Greene tosses his shirt to the kid. Anyway this is what makes brands iconic, having a point of you around the world around them. And then the second thing is I think Coke has always been able to leverage its assets in new ways. Of course we have a core business but it's always been able to adapt and change to the marketplace by offering new products and services, again, that are outside of our core business. I mean Coke and every other large corporation can't stand on its laurels. So you have to adapt. Every large company or brand or product must adapt to be relevant. Every company is right now afraid of having a Kodak moment. You can imagine that the people inside of Kodak looking at the iPhone and calling it a toy at some point, now they're not. So that's what every large company, every brand should be looking at and frankly avoiding. And lots of phrases out there right now rolling around disruptive innovation and so forth, but whatever you want to call it every brand, every company, every large organization must remain relevant or they simply die. Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta, returned from the Civil War with hopes of inventing something that would bring him success. Because Pemberton’s previous experiments with medicines had been largely unsuccessful, he opted for a different angle; he decided to make his own soda fountain syrup. After stirring up his distinctly flavored, caramel-colored syrup, Pemberton headed to his neighborhood pharmacy, Jacob’s Pharmacy, where it was mixed with carbonated water. There, the drink was sampled by customers who agreed that it was something special. Jacob’s Pharmacy began selling the drink for five cents a glass; shortly after, it was named Coca-Cola by Pemberton’s partner, Frank Robinson, who also helped to develop the classic red-and-white script that is still used today. During the first year, Coca-Cola was not as successful as Pemberton had hoped; despite advertising campaigns in newspapers and coupons for free samples, only nine glasses of Coke were consumed each day. In 1888, just before his ....., Pemberton sold Coca-Cola to Asa Chandler; Chandler, an avid businessman, expanded, selling Coca-Cola to cities outside Atlanta. Coca-Cola is viewed as a classic staple of American culture that has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. But how much do you really know about the drink? Worth Its Weight In Gold Fact: the Coca-Cola company makes a lot of money. So much so, that it’s been estimated that the company makes around $35.1 billion each year on average. As of this year, the brand value for Coca-Cola was generated at being 78.14 billion US dollars which is a little less than the previous year’s 80.31 billion US dollars. That’s way more than Starbucks, Red Bull, Pepsi, and Budweiser put together. Thanks to that hefty $35.1 billion in yearly revenue, the company is technically classified as “the 84th largest economy in the world.” Which is apparently more than Costa Rica’s own economy according to a 2010 Securities and Exchange Commission that Coca-Cola had filed. 6. Medicinal Coke Before Coca-Cola was just a simple soda, it was once advertised as a medicinal tonic to “cure” ailments such as headaches, impotence, and specifically those who were addicted to morphine. Today, you couldn’t treat any of those things with the modern coke formula but there is another condition that the soda can help ease. Individuals who suffer from asthma can potentially benefit from drinking anything that is a source of caffeine, like coke or coffee during an attack. The caffeine will metabolize into theophylline, a drug that was used to treat asthma as it causes the airways to relax. It’s better to get the caffeine from tea or coffee, but most people have coke on hand. 5. Contaminated Coke It seems unfathomable to imagine that a company you’re supposed to trust is actually poisoning you and you have no idea that it’s happening. That was the reality for the population of India. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) of New Delhi had conducted an investigation and had several of Coca-Cola’s drinks, also Pepsi’s, tested from 25 different bottling plants. The CSE discovered that all the samples contained an amalgam of three to five different cancerous pesticides. Not only that, but the company even admitted that it was also responsible for contributing to India’s already growing water scarcity. Why just last year the company was forced to close a bottling plant located in north India due to activist pressure. 4. Flying Accusations It was back in 2003 that the Coca-Cola Company charitably donated $1 million to the American Academy Of Pediatric Dentistry or AAPD as part of a partnership between the two. Coincidentally, the AAPD released a statement later that same year saying that Coke was not harmful to children’s teeth. That happens to be the exact opposite of what they’ve been saying for years based off of solid evidence that they’ve gathered. This is what led to the company being accused of bribing the AAPD into making that statement. Sugary and acidic drinks like coke are one of the leading factors contributing to health problems such as cavities and obesity and that’s the tooth. 3. Coca-Cola And Sugar Rations At the time of World War I, the Coca-Cola Company took a major dent due to sugar rations but managed to bounce back and was the leading drink during the second world war. This was strongly due to the company’s war efforts that provided military soldiers with massive amounts of the sweet stuff. The soldiers claimed that the drink would act as a sort of “pick-me-up” while they were out fighting on the front lines. During the middle of the war in 1992, the Coca-Cola Company was thriving thanks to the sugar rations that the United States had placed and were exempt from. Other soft drink companies, unfortunately, weren’t as lucky. 2. Coca-Cola And Germany During 1939 to 1945, the Coca-Cola Company was one of the high-profile American companies to do business with Germany, along with IBM and General Motors. The German division of the Coca-Cola Company continued to run under the fascist regime. It’s said that even some of the top executives of the company were affiliated members of a certain party. The sales were doing well up until the United States joined the war and placed an embargo on Germany that prevented the export of Coca-Cola syrup. Without the ingredient, they could no longer supply the production of coke. Instead, the company created the drink Fanta as a substitute by using whey and apple pomace. How Coca-Cola is looking to win back global market share

At the recent launch of Coca-Cola’s new 'One Brand' global marketing strategy in Dubai, Sharon Keith, Marketing Director, Coca-Cola S.A., explains the shift and the thinking behind it… “We have tested these [new] ads, and tested the campaign amongst teenagers and Millennials, and we’ve had very positive responses,” says Keith. “We will never move away from our commitment to the communities, and the countries that we service.” She notes that for Millennials in particular, proximity is a key factor. “While it may be important to hear about big global causes (flood relief, global warming, etc) what Millennials care most about is their immediate environment,” explains Keith. “So we need to be [as a brand] authentic and real…” Keith adds that this was the key learning from the ‘Open Happiness’ campaign… “We were potentially getting into areas that we couldn’t deliver on,” she says. “We can’t instantly make people happy, but we can give them a simple moment of pleasure. So we’re bringing [the brand] closer, and we are making sure that it’s relevant to the people we are talking to…” With regards to being a ‘brand central’ campaign as opposed to a ‘product central’ campaign, Keith says that the company is confident in its ability to integrate all of the variants into the advertising material. shutterstock_364560299 “Sometimes you will see the original Coke in a poster, sometimes you will see Coke Light, or Coke Zero, and sometimes you will see all three,” she explains. “Just as people love seeing themselves, they love to see their variant. Where we were getting tangled up was in seeing them [Coke Light, Coke Zero, etc] not as variants, but as brands – and I’m not sure they were the size in Southern Africa to warrant brand status…relative to Coca-Cola original, they are much smaller [in this market]. ”
