Effective Design of RESTful APIs
Mohamed Taman, Sr. Enterprise Architect / Sr. Software Engineer, WebCentric Developers creating websites, especially back-end developers, need to know how to build RESTful APIs correctly. Nowadays those APIs are serving many channels: mobile, microservices components, IoT, integration, or all of these. This session will help you plan and model your own APIs and understand security and the six REST design constraints that help guide your architecture. It starts with a simple overview, including advice on identifying the participants in your system and the activities they might perform with it. The presenter will help you paper-test your model, validating the design before you build it and providing a live example to make sure the concept is clear. Finally the session explores the HTTP concepts and REST constraints needed to build your API.

Project Panama’s Foreign API
Maurizio Cimadamore, Oracle Project Panama is about getting the Java runtime closer to the hardware system (or metal) so it can perform more efficiently and developers can be more productive. A key component of Project Panama is the Foreign API, a foreign function interface that aims to provide a superior alternative to JNI. Developers can bind Java interfaces to native methods and write platform-specific Java code to those interfaces with no need for Java native methods and writing platform-specific code in C or C++. This session explains the Panama Foreign API and presents examples. Developers will come away with a good understanding of the API and will have the knowledge to experiment with early-access builds.

Serverless Java: Challenges and Triumph
Shaun Smith, Director of Product Management--Serverless, Oracle David Delabassee, Software Evangelist, Oracle Serverless functions are hot, and developer and corporate interest is exploding! But let’s face it, although Java is one of the top two programming languages in the world, it isn’t the most popular language for writing functions—at least not yet. According to James Governor, “When web companies grow up, they turn into Java shops,” so as functions become mainstream, will Java become the dominant language for authoring functions? Can it be? This session examines the challenges to using Java for functions and the latest Java platform features that address them. It also digs into the open source Fn project’s unparalleled Java support, which makes it possible to build, test, and scale out Java-based functions applications.

An Introduction to Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) with Cucumber for Java
This tutorial TUT1607 looks at what Cucumber is good for—and what it isn’t. It briefly covers what behavior-driven development (BDD) is and how Cucumber helps deliver on the promise of improved communication between the business and the development team. Then it dives into how Cucumber works, the specific details of the Java version (Cucumber-JVM), and what makes it different from other similar tools. Finally, it considers how Cucumber can fit into your test automation strategy and produce "living documentation" that is always up to date. You will come away with everything you need to know to be able to decide whether BDD (using Cucumber-JVM) is for you. Speaker: Seb Rose, Developer & consultant, Claysnow Consultant, coach, designer, analyst and developer for over 30 years. Seb has been involved in the full development lifecycle with experience that ranges from Architecture to Support, from BASIC to Ruby. Recently he has been helping teams adopt and refine their agile practices, with a particular focus on collaboration and automated testing. Database Design 39 - Indexes (Clustered, Nonclustered, Composite Index)
This video covers the basics of indexes. Indexing is an extremely important step of database design. Without Indexes database queries can take a substantial amount of time and hog system resources. The main two classifications of indexes are clustered and non-clustered indexes. Clustered indexes are usually the primary key and determine how the data is actually stored in the table. These are the fastest and most effective. Non-clustered indexes sort a reference to data that is still fast but doesn't actually determine how the data is structured. The best tip I can give you is to use indexes but don't over use them. Having loads of indexes on columns that are barely ever in a where clause or join can bog down the database. This is because every time the table is updated the index must also be updated! When a database looks through a table for certain where conditions on a column that does not have an index, it does an entire table scan. This is not a good practice for large databases (or even small databases but not as bad). With an index the database will do an index seek and quickly find the data you are looking for. Composite indexes consist of two or more columns within one index. Use these when you plan on using the two columns together for a database query WHERE clause. The art of building Java APIs: Do's and Don'ts - Jonathan Giles
As developers we build on the shoulders of giants - using APIs developed by others to propel ourselves further forward. We often find ourselves in the position where we must provide our own APIs for other developers to use. Building a Java API is not without perils -we must know the features of the language extremely well, we must understand the implications of breaking compatibility, we must own many other responsibilities such as creating excellent documentation, and most importantly, we must practice restraint. This session will give an introduction to developers on how they should develop their own APIs, whether it be for internal use, an open source project, or a commercial library. The focus is purely on building Java APIs, not REST APIs or anything else! Jonathan has over 10 years experience building Java APIs, firstly at Sun Microsystems and Oracle in the Java team working on Java releases 7, 8, 9, and 10, and more recently he has joined Microsoft as a cloud developer advocate, where he works closely with the engineering teams to improve the Java API offering for Azure. This session will work through tips that developers should follow, and advice for developers to avoid.

Avoiding Java EE Application Design Traps to Achieve Effective Use of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing and the Java EE platform have evolved to provide a runtime environment for Java EE applications with minimal architectural interference. This evolution is addressing issues from the application server and cloud infrastructure point of view. However, design decisions and best practices for the conception of an architecture can influence the choice of a cloud environment. This session presents some tips and tricks for avoiding the traps that prevent effective use of a cloud infrastructure during development of a typical Java EE application. Each tip and trick is evaluated in terms of its impact on the performance, scalability, distribution, elasticity, and cost of some clouds on the market. Copyright © 2013 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) Tutorial - Part 1
Learn how to create an Entity Relationship Diagram in this tutorial. We provide a basic overview of ERDs and then gives step-by-step training on how to make an ER diagram with correct cardinality. Entity Relationship Diagrams are comprised of 3 main categories: entities, attributes, and relationships. Entities are objects or concepts that are associated with important data—like a customer, order, or product. Attributes represent properties or traits of an entity, such as a customer’s phone number or home address. Relationships demonstrate the link between entities. Another main aspect of of ERD's is cardinality, which further defines the relationship between entities in a numerical way. Certain symbols signify the minimum and maximum relationship between different entities. Data visualisation - Design and principles
Presented: 22 March 2018 A good data visualisation does not only convert large amounts of data into images, but when done well, it engages the viewer and tells a story. It draws the viewer in and allows them to explore the data and see patterns in data that they were not previously aware of. this is the first of a two part webinar series to learn more about data visualisation from Martin Schweitzer, Data Technologist, ANDS. This webinar will focus on design and principles, while the second will focus on tools and techniques. Come to one or come to both! After webinar one, you will no longer see visualisations in the same way, but have a more critical and appreciative eye when viewing both your own visualisations and those of others. You will also have a basic toolkit of principles to apply when either looking at data or improving it. Besides explaining how to improve visualisations, Martin will also be presenting examples of good and bad visualisations (some from his own work). Effective HATEOAS with JAX-RS
Truly RESTful applications leverage media types and contextual links to make your service discoverable and self-descriptive (with hypermedia as the engine of application state [HATEOAS]). Not only does this encourage a stateless implementation but it can also be used as live documentation supporting exploration and testing of your REST application. This presentation shares the experience of building several RESTful applications with JAX-RS. Structuring the API around use cases and interactions provides practical patterns for taking advantage of hypermedia instead of being an afterthought. Copyright © 2013 Oracle and/or its affiliates.
