Coral Sea Fishing Video!! South Diamond Islet!!

10:13
http://www.reefari.com Another awesome fishing video of the amazing coral sea and into the remote Diamond islet group. This video starts at South Diamond Islet, one of the first coral Atolls we come across with Vegetation. Can't tell you how amazing a location this is, Try and find it on Google Earth and will see how far offshore we are. Approx 400 Kilometres plus and over 30 hours of steaming, but well worth it for such a pristine area. The fishing was amazing with some great fish caught throwing poppers and Stickbaits off the beach. Visibility for some diving off the beach was mind blowing and lots of big Bluespot coral trout were very memorable. Jason's great effort of a big GT off the beach in some very difficult reefy country was insane, and great to release the GT in good condition. Bluefin Trevally, Sharks, Moray eels and heaps more including the wonderful birdlife which have probably never seen humans. These are the things which make for a special trip. Make sure you check out norval fishing charters and South Diamond islet for an ultimate trip out to the coral sea. The bottom fishing was difficult, with lots of Red Bass and sharks a constant problem, indicative of a healthy reef system, but the Weather did make it difficult to fish the open areas of the Plateau and amazing drop offs on the continental shelf, and the insane pelagic potential this area had for Monster Dogtooth. Please subscribe with more videos coming soon!! of the next stage to East Diamond Islets and more, Cheers Greg

Coral Sea. Campaing Commander Vol. II

27:47
The ship went down with 216 crew members and 35 aircraft. But 2,770 crewmen and officers were rescued by awaiting U.S. ships. The Lexington was the first aircraft carrier to be sunk in history. A Breakthrough for Coral Reef Restoration

08:02
Dr. David Vaughan is working to combat the crisis in the world’s coral reefs—that is, that humans have lost 25 to 40 percent of the world’s corals in recent decades due largely to seawater temperature rise and ocean acidification. Vaughan has developed a game-changing technique called “microfragmenting” that allows corals to grow more than 25 times faster than normal, which could rapidly restore the dwindling population of healthy coral reefs. The Atlantic visited Dr. Vaughan in the Florida Keys to uncover how the process works and understand how much hope there is to revitalize our reefs. USS Coral Sea (CV-43) - The Ageless Warrior

06:25
USS Coral Sea, a 45,000-ton Midway class large aircraft carrier built at Newport News, Virginia, was commissioned on 1 October 1947 to begin a career that lasted more than four decades. Following initial operations in the western Atlantic area, she made a midshipmen training cruise in mid-1948 that included visits to the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas. In May 1949, Coral Sea began the first of many Sixth Fleet deployments. These took place nearly annually as the Cold War intensified in the 1950s and included regular "flag showing" and nuclear deterrent missions along the European southern flank. Amid this activity, the ship was reclassified as an attack aircraft carrier in October 1952, changing her hull number to CVA-43. Climaxing the first stage of her long service, Coral Sea transited to the west coast, by way of South America, in February-April 1957 to begin an extensive modernization. The greatly-altered Coral Sea returned to active service in January 1960. Her flight deck had been greatly enlarged, with an angled landing area, three deck-edge aircraft elevators and three powerful steam catapults to facilitate operation of the latest aircraft types. The work also included fitting the ship with an enclosed "hurricane" bow, greater beam and many other improvements. Later in 1960, Coral Sea crossed the Pacific for the first of more than a dozen Seventh Fleet cruises. These included vigorous participation in the Southeast Asian conflict between 1965 and 1972 and in evacuation and other activities as the Republic of Vietnam collapsed in the the Spring of 1975. At the end of June 1975, Coral Sea was reclassified CV-43 to reflect expansion of her air group to include anti-submarine warfare aircraft. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Coral Sea's western Pacific deployments were extended to cover the vicinity of the increasingly tense Persian Gulf. In April 1980 she supported the abortive effort to rescue American hostages held in Iran. Beginning in March 1983 the ship redeployed westbound to the Atlantic, serving in the Far East for one last time and also operating in the Arabian Sea, Mediterranean and off South and Central America before the long cruise ended in September 1983. Just over two years later, Coral Sea returned to the Mediterranean, where she launched air strikes against targets in terrorist Libya in April 1986. Two more Sixth Fleet deployments took place in 1987-88 and in 1989. USS Coral Sea decommissioned in April 1990 and was sold for scrapping in May 1993. She was slowly broken up at Baltimore, Maryland, over the next several years. Source: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-c/cvb43.htm

Battle of the Coral Sea - Lest We Forget new documentary

06:38
Battle of the Coral Sea - Lest We Forget The Coral Sea holds great historical significance for Australia and the United States. In May 1942, it was the scene of a naval battle that reversed the tide of World War II in the Pacific. The Protect Our Coral Sea campaign has produced an 8-minute documentary in honour of those who fought and died in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Special thanks to veterans Tommy Simms and Ted Simpson and their families and naval historian Dr David Stevens and everyone else involved with this documentary for their contribution.

Dive beneath the ocean waves and explore the unique and diverse relationships found on a coral reef. How do species interact on a coral reef? Dive beneath the ocean waves and explore the many unique symbiotic relationships found in this diverse ecosystem. In addition to showcasing live footage from a unique ecosystem, each of the three videos in the Exploring Ecosystems series features an opportunity for students to actively participate in a problem-solving scenario based on an ongoing research project of an Academy scientist. As you watch the video, be prepared to pause at key points to participate fully! Coral Reef Biology | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD

Jonathan examines the biology of coral reefs and their importance to the marine ecosystem. A coral reef may look like a bunch of colorful rocks, or perhaps some unusual-looking plants, but it's actually a strange primitive animal. Each coral animal, called a polyp, is only about the size of a pearl. It’s little more than a mouth with some tentacles around it. The tentacles are used to catch plankton to eat. Coral is closely related to another tentacle-equipped animal: the jelly. If you can imagine a small jelly stuck to the bottom that can’t swim, that’s a coral polyp. But unlike jellies, coral polyps grow together in colonies called a coral head. This coral head has several hundred polyps. A bigger one has thousands! Beneath the living skin of the coral is a skeleton made of calcium carbonate. A dead piece of coral is heavy like a rock, because the calcium carbonate is limestone—a type of rock. This heavy limestone base anchors the colony so waves and storms can’t move coral reefs. The creation of limestone is slow. It takes hundreds of years for a coral head to reach the size of this brain coral. And in spite of the fact that it looks like a brain, coral has no brain. Or eyes. Some corals are not hard as a rock. There are many species of soft corals. Some look like bushes or fans. These are often called gorgonians, sea whips or sea fans. Others look like pastel works of art. Soft corals grow anchored to the bottom and look to most people like plants. But up close, you can see the coral polyps. Instead of a hard skeleton, these soft corals have tiny splinters of calcium carbonate inside called spicules. They allow the coral to bend and flex with the waves. When many coral colonies grow together, the result is a reef. It’s a living, growing structure that provides nooks and crannies for everything from invertebrates to fish. A reef is like the buildings in a city, providing housing and protection for thousands of animals. When a reef forms, it creates new habitat for other animals. Maybe it starts out as just a small coral head with only space for a few fish. But as it grows over many years, more and more marine life flocks to the reef until it is a thriving metropolis. Coral reefs can grow quite large. The largest one in the world is the Great Barrier Reef off northeastern Australia, which is over 1500 miles long! It’s so big it can be seen from space! Coral reefs live all around the world in tropical waters. They can’t live in cold water because the coral is unable to create calcium carbonate if the water gets too cold. Many corals have a greenish or brownish color because they have tiny microscopic algae living in their skin called zooxanthellae. The zooxanthellae make energy from the sun’s rays. In exchange for having a nice place to live in the skin of the coral, they share some of their energy with the coral. So the coral is partially solar powered. As long as they grow in nice shallow, sunlit water, solar powered corals don’t need to catch much plankton. This is why reefs form in shallow water. Sometimes I see coral that is turning white as if it’s losing its color. This is called bleaching. When corals are subjected to environmental stress, such as high or low water temperatures, changes in salinity or pH, siltation, or even just too much sun from a really low tide, they start to turn white. This happens because the zooxanthellae starts to die. Since corals get their color from the zooxanthellae, when the zooxanthellae goes away, so does the color. And if it goes on for too long, the coral dies because it needs the energy from the zooxanthellae.

Coral Reefs and Coral Bleaching - Environment & Ecology for UPSC CSE By Shreyaa Sharma

13:01
Coral reefs and coral bleaching - In this lesson we learn about the Coral Reefs and Coral Bleaching. Coral reefs are found in circumtropical shallow tropical waters along the shores of islands and continents. The reef substrate is mainly composed of calcium carbonate from living and dead scleractinian corals. Many other invertebrates, vertebrates, and plants live in close association to the scleractinian corals, with tight resource coupling and recycling, allowing coral reefs to have extremely high productivity and biodiversity, such that they are referred to as ‘the Tropical Rainforests of the Oceans’. Coral reef bleaching, the whitening of diverse invertebrate taxa, results from the loss of symbiotic zooxanthellae and/or a reduction in photosynthetic pigment concentrations in zooxanthellae residing within scleractinian corals. Coral reef bleaching is caused by various anthropogenic and natural variations in the reef environment including sea temperature, solar irradiance, sedimentation, xenobiotics, subaerial exposure, inorganic nutrients, freshwater dilution, and epizootic. Coral bleaching events have been increasing in both frequency and extent worldwide in the past 20 years. Global climate change may play a role in the increase in coral bleaching events, and could cause the destruction of major reef tracts and the extinction of many coral species. Important for Environment and Ecology for UPSC CSE aspirants. Must watch for all. Alien Reefs [Coral Documentary] | Wild Things

48:05
Coral reefs are some of the richest hotspots of biodiversity on the planet. The warm water reefs of the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea are well know, but they dont only occur in warm waters. In some of the oceans coldest, darkest depths they are thriving. The deep water reefs are formed by icebergs as they slide across the sea bed, leaving behind perfect foundations for coral to build upon. Hidden from view, they criss cross the planet from the deep water tropics to the freezing Arctic. Some have never been explored by humans. Underwater cameramen have ventured down to the pitch blackness to find life thriving. In this one hour HD special, our team will enter this alien environment. And discover a strange, hidden world abundant with life, from the weird to the wonderful. How to Conduct a Coral Reef Survey

08:26
A Look at the Living Ocean Foundation's Underwater Survey Methods Using the M/Y Golden Shadow as a research platform, research scientists implement standardized protocols to map, characterize, and evaluate coral reefs. The research involves comparing coral reefs across gradients of biodiversity, oceanographic conditions and human pressures to determine their status and major threats, and to identify key factors that enhance their health and resilience. The Living Oceans Foundation looks at three main components when characterizing the health of a reef: • We look at the fish (Fish Census); • We look at what's on the bottom—that includes corals and other things (Benthic Survey); and • We look at the corals (Belt Transect). By learning how to conduct these types of surveys, you can make your own observations about aquatic resources near you. You may not live near a coral reef, but you can still use these methods to measure other important plants and animals that exist in habitats close to your home or school.
