Indonesia. Bajau (Sea Gypsies Tribe) | Tribes & Ethnic Groups

07:07
In this documentary we travel to Indonesia, the Sulawesi island, there we know the Toraja and Bajau, two ethnic groups who have a very particular culture and traditions. There, we attended a Toraja funeral, an event that they have become an amazing ritual of several days. We dive into the wonderful world that lies behind the coral reef that runs through large part of the Indonesian archipelago. And finally we boarded on the Bajau (sea gypsies) houseboats who live in even closer contact with the sea. In fact, they could not conceive of life without it. ▶ SUBSCRIBE! http://bit.ly/PlanetDoc Full Documentaries every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday! ▶ Documentary. "Indonesia. The Ghosts of Sulawesi" http://pdoc.es/SulawesiPL The inhabitants of Sulawesi have always had a very close relationship with the sea. These men belong to the Bugui ethnic group, considered the best boat builders and sailors in the Indian Ocean. But there is another ethnic group which lives in even closer contact with the sea. In fact, they could not conceive of life without it. That group is the Bajau. At the other end of the island, in the calm waters of the Gulf of Tomini, these nomads have for centuries conquered the sea. They live out their lives on these small, fragile boats called leppas, where they are born, marry, reproduce and die. In them they move along the coast, propelled by the winds and the currents, and rarely set foot on dry land. Their origins remain unknown, though some anthropologists believe they come from the south of the Malaysian peninsula. Since then, innumerable legends have surrounded these the Sea Gypsies They rarely venture far from the coast. Their lives are spent fishing close by the mangrove swamps and the coral reefs. Here, they find almost everything they need. The Bajau know many different fishing methods, but perhaps the most curious of all is this one, fishing with kites. The technique they use is simple but very effective. It consists of attaching a hook to the kite, which is made from fern leaves, and with the help of a pole, the fisherman can move the hook as far out as he wants. The swaying of the kite keeps the bait in constant movement, attracting above all the flying fish. The government tried to house the first families along the coast, but they were unable to adapt to dry land, and soon returned to their boats. Then, the Bajau suggesting building the village over the sea, and so Torosiaji was born. Though the greatest number of Bajaus live in Sulawesi, there are also groups of them in Myanmar, where they are called Moken, or ‘the people drowned by the sea’; in Thailand, they are known as the Chao Nam, or ‘water people’, and they can also be found along the coasts of the Philippines and Vietnam. 16:50:00 The mosque and the school are the only buildings in Torosiaji standing on dry land. Well, not exactly dry land, because they have been build on foundations made of coral. At midday, the waters are very shallow, and this is when the Bajau comb the sea bottom in search of food. Their basic diet is fish and rice. The rice they buy in the markets on the coast, where once a week the women go to sell the fish they have caught, and buy basic necessities such as fresh water. The Bajau are also magnificent divers, and can remain underwater for over five minutes, and dive down up to 15 metres. ▶ SUBSCRIBE | http://bit.ly/PlanetDoc ▶ FULL DOCUMENTARIES | http://bit.ly/Full-Docs ▶ TRIBES DOCUMENTARIES | http://bit.ly/PlTribes ▶ FACEBOOK | http://bit.ly/FBPDoc ▶ TWITTER | http://bit.ly/TwPDoc ▶ TUMBLR | http://bit.ly/TbPlDoc

Invasions of the Sea Peoples: Egypt & The Late Bronze Age Collapse

08:41
The years between around 1500 and 1200 BC are often cited as some of the most prosperous that the world had ever seen. The Eastern Mediterranean world inhabited by the Egyptians, the Hittites and the Minoans, as well as numerous smaller states around them, was a truly cosmopolitan system rarely seen in world history. Greek and Hittite trade goods regularly show up in archaeological sites in Egypt, whereas Egyptian hieroglyphs and trade goods are found in places such as the island of Crete and Mycenae. One shipwreck off the coast of Turkey carried goods from nine different states aboard. As evidenced by substantial diplomatic communications as well as trade, the world of the Late Bronze Age was a vast interconnected system. The culmination of an unbroken cultural line which had existed since the first cities three thousand years before. Little did the inhabitants of these lands know however that from around 1200 BC their world would catastrophically and violently fall apart in a decades long cataclysm known as the Late Bronze Age Collapse. 'PEOPLE OF THE SEA A Novel of The Promised Land' 'New History, New Hope' by Jack Dempsey

09:18
Speaking on his new (2017) novel “People of the Sea: A Novel of The Promised Land,” historian Dr. Jack Dempsey (Ph.D. Brown University) shares important points about the little-known, positive legacy carried by the infamous Sea Peoples and Philistines from Aegean and Minoan civilizations into ancient Palestine. What does it mean for us today to know that Western Civilization (begun with 2,000+ successful years in Minoan Crete) visibly turned from a woman-centered, mostly-peaceful, highly creative “loose confederacy” into a patriarchal state constructed around war, ideology and dynasties of kings? What became of the “promised lands” envisioned by the families on both sides of this fundamental story? Readers of The Bible/Old Testament will know “Philistines” as the first people(s) demonized as uncultured, war-loving brutes---until their human voices, memories and adventures speak their own points of view for the first time in “People of the Sea.” CONTACT: Dr. Jack Dempsey via Ancientlights.org or email [email protected] **See Reader Reviews, Order your hard copy! https://www.amazon.com/People-Sea-Jack-Dempsey/dp/1582188831/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491211523&sr=8-1&keywords=jack+dempsey+people+of+the+sea **Enjoy Excerpts from “People of the Sea” read by Jack Dempsey here on YouTube! **Explore this new history in detail---plus many further multimedia links to resources---with "People of the Sea: Life Beyond The Catastrophe Cycle," at jackdempseywriter.wordpress.com SEE ALSO **An extensive Photo-Tour of the ancient Mediterranean places in this novel at: jackdempseywriter.wordpress.com “The Knossos Calendar: Minoan Cycles of the Sun, the Moon, the Soul & Political Power” (Iraklion, Crete: Mystis Editions 2016) “Calendar House: Clues to Minoan Time from Knossos Labyrinth” at Ancientlights.org “Ariadne’s Brother: A Novel on the Fall of Bronze Age Crete” (Athens: Kalendis 1996), also at Ancientlights.org

Morcheeba - The sea

05:46
Morcheeba - The sea lyrics Flocking to the sea Crowds of people wait for me Sea gulls scavenge Steal ice cream Worries vanish Within my dream I left my soul there, Down by the sea I lost control here Living free I left my soul there, Down by the sea I lost control here Living free Fishing boats sail past the shore No singing may-day any more The sun is shining The Water's clear Just you and I walk along the pier I left my soul there, Down by the sea I lost control here Living free I left my soul there, Down by the sea I lost control here Living free A cool breeze flows but mind the wasp Some get stung it's worth the cost I'd love to stay The city calls me home More hassles fuss and lies on the phone I left my soul there, Down by the sea I lost control here Living free I left my soul there, Down by the sea I lost control here Living free I left my soul there, Down by the sea I lost control here Living free I left my soul there, Down by the sea I lost control with you, And living, living, And I, living, by the sea

The Sea Peoples and the Trojan War (Lecture 4)

32:23
Archaeology and the Trojan War: In this lecture series by Eric H.Cline you will delve deep into the Trojan war between the Trojans and the Greeks while separating fact from fiction. The Trojan War, captured forever in Homer's epic poem the Iliad, resonates to the present day in the popular imagination, and this magnificent confrontation continues to exert a tremendous influence on modern audiences. But did Troy actually exist? And if so, where is it located? Was the Trojan War actually fought? If it was, did it take place over the course of ten years, as Homer wrote, or was it a much longer series of battles? And why was the war fought? Could Helen's face alone really have launched a thousand ships? In this course, esteemed professor Eric H. Cline examines the real history of Troy and delves into the archaeological discoveries (which continue to the present day) that help to answer the questions above. Through an entertaining and incisive analysis of known data, Professor Cline provides a fuller, richer understanding of this historic clash.

1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed (Eric Cline, PhD)

01:10:18
From about 1500 BC to 1200 BC, the Mediterranean region played host to a complex cosmopolitan and globalized world-system. It may have been this very internationalism that contributed to the apocalyptic disaster that ended the Bronze Age. When the end came, the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from Greece and Italy in the west to Egypt, Canaan, and Mesopotamia in the east. Large empires and small kingdoms collapsed rapidly. With their end came the world’s first recorded Dark Ages. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in Greece and the other affected areas, setting the stage for the evolution of Western society as we know it today. Professor Eric H. Cline of The George Washington University will explore why the Bronze Age came to an end and whether the collapse of those ancient civilizations might hold some warnings for our current society. Considered for a Pulitzer Prize for his recent book 1177 BC, Dr. Eric H. Cline is Professor of Classics and Anthropology and the current Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute at The George Washington University. He is a National Geographic Explorer, a Fulbright scholar, an NEH Public Scholar, and an award-winning teacher and author. He has degrees in archaeology and ancient history from Dartmouth, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania; in May 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree (honoris causa) from Muhlenberg College. Dr. Cline is an active field archaeologist with 30 seasons of excavation and survey experience. Lost At Sea - Jet Ski - Shot With Gopro - Samsung Galaxy S5 Saved Our Lives - Williams Family Fun

03:18
The Gopro recorded us jet skiing at 110 miles (exaggeration) an hour. After hitting a huge wave we flew about 40 feet away from the jet ski. It was very difficult to swim with the waves and the life vest. The waves pushed us further and further away from the jet ski and from each other. Thanks to emergency 911 dialing on the water resistant Galaxy S 5 we were able to contact 911/EMT and were rescued by the sheriff/Coast Guard. We were found by the coast guard 45 minutes later. It was around 6pm when they found us. Thank God becaseu it was starting to get dark. Everything was caught on filmed with a Gopro Hero 3+. I had to marry this guy after this experience! He kept me at peace the entire time. He kept telling me to stay calm when all I could think about was sharks ripping my feet off. Weird and Creepy Creatures People Found In The Deep Sea

11:26
Weird and Creepy Creatures People Found In The Deep Sea Roman Fedortsov spends most of his time on fishing trawlers. Some of his catches, however, end up going viral on the internet instead of being quietly digested in someone's tummy. "I'm 39 and have been working onboard trawlers for seventeen years," Roman told Bored Panda. "I live in Murmansk, Russia. It is a big port, and that's why I enrolled in the Marine University after school. My specialization has a lot to do with fishing technology. I know how to prepare fish for freezing and further delivery to the customer." Roman brought most of these photos from the Norwegian and Barents seas while some of them came ashore from the Atlantic Ocean. Once on a fishing trip, Roman and his mates live in six-hour cycles. They work for six hours, then rest for another six. And repeat. "We are to catch commercial fish such as Cod, Haddock, Halibut, Redfish, Herring, Mackerel, and so on," he added. "The most extreme fish I have ever caught are Frilled Shark, Rabbitfish, Big Sunfish, Angler, Stoplight Loosejaw..." "During my watch, I work at the fish factory. I'm responsible for processing the fish, so I have to control other seamen while they're working, too." Roman really likes finding unusual types of animals aboard the trawl. "I decided to create social media accounts because many people have no idea how some of the fish look. I'm constantly impressed by the appearance of some deep water fish and want to share my experiences with other people." "I have never been scared of the fish I catch," he said. 'People of the Salish Sea (Coast Salish)' from the film 'Clearwater'

11:14
"People of the Salish Sea" is an excerpt from the feature non-fiction film and media project called Clearwater. Supported by the Suquamish, Snoqualmie, Lummi, Muckleshoot and Squaxin Island tribes, this story explores the inherent relationship between the Coast Salish people and the waters of the Pacific Northwest. Join us as we move from the "place of clear salt water" to the shores of Bella Bella, British Columbia, during the 2014 Canoe Journey. It is in these waters and the adjacent shores—past, present and future—that the Coast Salish people live on the lands of their ancestors and great-great grandchildren. Produced by Tracy Rector Cinematography by Daniel Mimura, Laura James, and Lou Karsen Field Support by Lydia Sigo, Joe Seymour, Melissa Woodrow and Rose Stiffarm Original songs by the Suquamish Canoe Family and Kate Ahvakana Composition by BC Campbell Edited by Jacob Bearchum Run time: 10:00 min.

8 GREAT TIPS FOR SURVIVAL AT SEA

06:11
Most of us adore beach resorts and go to one of the large saltwater bodies at least once a year. However, we shouldn’t forget that the sea is as attractive as it is wayward. We at Bright Side wondered how a person who happened to be in the open sea should behave. It turns out there are several rules that aren’t at all difficult to remember. Despair is your most dangerous enemy. Don’t give up hope of being saved. There are many stories of people who were found in the open sea months after their disappearance. For instance, 25-year-old sailor Poon Lim, who worked on a British merchant ship, survived alone 133 days in the open sea. After a shipwreck, he managed to find a raft with fresh water, cookies, flares, and a flashlight. Every day, Lim ate only 2 cookies and made 3 sips of water. To avoid muscle atrophy, he even floated around the raft twice a day. As you can see, human possibilities are endless. The main thing is to keep calm and hope for the best. TIMESTAMPS Calm down 0:35 Choose the right swimming style 0:57 Find something that floats 1:37 Take care of clothes 1:55 Decide what you’ll eat 2:16 Provide yourself with liquid 3:01 Save yourself properly 4:02 Don’t lose hope 5:06 SUMMARY - Panic definitely won’t help you. It can cloud your judgment and make you lose the rhythm of breathing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to calm down. - The style of swimming you choose determines how long your strength will last. In calm water, it’s better to swim on your back. If waves splash around you, it’s better to swim on your belly. - If you’re in the open sea as a result of a shipwreck or an airplane water landing, there must be plenty of things around you that perfectly keep afloat. It will be even better if it’s a boat or a raft with which ships are equipped. - Remember that open sunlight can be extremely dangerous. So don’t remove your clothes — they’ll protect you from the sun. - If you have rations, divide them into small daily portions. This will make them last for a long time, and you won’t have problems with digestion. - Try to fish even if you have stores of food. After all, fish contain some liquid. - You have to consume the liquid constantly but never drink seawater. - Try to ensure that you always have a couple of empty containers left for collecting rainwater. According to studies, drinking untreated rainwater is safe for your health. - • If you found fluorescein, dissolve it in the water when you see an airplane or ship. It forms a bright spot around you which can be easily seen from the air and from afar. 🇮🇹 🇱🇾 Rescue at Sea: Migrants in the Mediterranean | People and Power

25:01
As long as there is war, poverty and insecurity in Africa and the Middle East, migrants and refugees will try and seek a better life in Europe. For many years now, one of the principle transit routes has been the dangerous sea crossing over the Mediterranean between Libya and Italy. Images of anxious people crammed into small and manifestly unsafe boats run by human traffickers have become sadly familiar around the world, as have the stories of sinkings and drownings that tragically are regularly attendant on these journeys. As a result, and against a background of hardening anti-migrant sentiment in Europe, the problem of how to best respond to and control this phenomenon - and reduce the number of fatalities - has become ever more hotly debated. For the last five years, EU navies have maintained a presence in the area to discourage people from making the journey. And since 2017, the Libyan coastguard, with the active support of the Italian government, has also become more active, mounting aggressive patrols off its long coastline. Both the EU and Libyan authorities insist their actions save lives and disrupt the criminal networks that feed off the migrants' desperation. But their methods, focused mainly on deterrence, policing and security are increasingly at odds with those of other groups operating in the area since 2014 - NGOs running maritime search and rescue (SAR) missions to aid migrants in peril. In August 2017, Italy asked all NGOs working in the area to sign a code of conduct, which in effect put strict legal and logistical constraints on their ability to operate. As a result, by mid-2018, only four NGOs were left pursuing SAR missions in the Mediterranean and there had been a number of highly charged stand-offs with the authorities. In March for example, after a tense altercation between Libyan coastguards and a vessel from Proactiva Open Arms involving 218 migrants and refugees, the NGO's ship was impounded in a Sicilian port for a month, with the crew held under investigation by the Italian authorities for allegedly "conspiring to facilitate illegal immigration". Then in June 2018, Italy refused to let the Aquarius - a ship run by SOS Mediterranee and Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) - disembark 600 rescued migrants in Italian ports. When Malta also declined to accept them it became a Europe-wide dispute. Eventually, the migrants were off-loaded in Spain, but this and other incidents had a chilling effect on NGOs and for a time left the Libyan coastguard as almost the only rescue option in Central Mediterranean waters. Much of the opposition to the NGOs' activities seems to stem from a belief that their presence encourages migrants to embark on journeys they would otherwise avoid, or even, in the words of Italy's controversial new Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, that they act as a "taxi service". The NGOs reject this claim entirely, but it highlights the fundamental differences between humanitarian groups seeking to save lives on the open seas and those focused on trying to dissuade people from making the treacherous crossing in the first place. It also raises serious questions about the way that long-standing international maritime norms on nautical rescue are allegedly being ignored - with sometimes fatal consequences. What is clear is that when no-one is available to help those in peril, lives will be lost. In November 2018, the UNHCR said that more than 2,000 refugees and migrants have died on the Mediterranean route this year and that the number of drownings has escalated sharply. In September alone, the refugee agency said one of every eight people making the dangerous journey towards Italy had been killed. This, it said, was due in part to the "legal and logistical restrictions that have been placed on a number of NGOs wishing to conduct search and rescue (SAR) operations." While the agency acknowledged the efforts of the Libyan coastguard in saving lives where it could, it added that any vessel with the capability should be allowed to come to the aid of those in need. Moreover, anyone rescued in international waters should not be taken back to Libya where conditions are not safe. With access to both sides, we sent filmmaker Paula Palacios to investigate the background to this complex debate and what may happen next.
