The Sea Peoples: Philistines and the Bronze Age Collapse (Lecture)

01:12:50
Aren M. Maeir, Professor, The Martin (Szusz) Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology, Bar-Ilan University and Director, The Tell es-Safi/Gath Archaeological Project, The Institute of Archaeology. The Philistines are well-known from biblical texts as one of the main adversaries of the ancient Israelite's. At the same time, the biblical narrative indicates that other types of interactions also were the norm. Recent excavations in Philistia, and in particular those at Tell es-Safi, biblical Gath of the Philistines, hometown of Goliath, have provided exciting evidence of the very complex interaction between these two cultures, revealing the multi-layered facets of what could be termed a Frenemy relationship between the Philistines and Israelites. In addition, recent finds have very much changed our understanding of who the Philistines were, where they came from, and how their culture formed, transformed, and eventually disappeared. These topics will be addressed in this lecture. The David Kipper Ancient Israel Lecture Series was established through a gift from Barbara Kipper and the Kipper Family and includes an annual public lecture as well as a lecture for scholars at the Oriental Institute.

Welcome to Top10Archive! There are few things more terrifying than being lost amongst the deep blue sea. Tales of people lost at sea end in one of two ways - either with celebration and good cheer or mystery and misery. For this installment, we’re going to retell ten tales of people that braved the high seas - and while some made it back to share their story, others sadly perished to the great depths. 8 GREAT TIPS FOR SURVIVAL AT SEA

06:11
Most of us adore beach resorts and go to one of the large saltwater bodies at least once a year. However, we shouldn’t forget that the sea is as attractive as it is wayward. We at Bright Side wondered how a person who happened to be in the open sea should behave. It turns out there are several rules that aren’t at all difficult to remember. Despair is your most dangerous enemy. Don’t give up hope of being saved. There are many stories of people who were found in the open sea months after their disappearance. For instance, 25-year-old sailor Poon Lim, who worked on a British merchant ship, survived alone 133 days in the open sea. After a shipwreck, he managed to find a raft with fresh water, cookies, flares, and a flashlight. Every day, Lim ate only 2 cookies and made 3 sips of water. To avoid muscle atrophy, he even floated around the raft twice a day. As you can see, human possibilities are endless. The main thing is to keep calm and hope for the best. TIMESTAMPS Calm down 0:35 Choose the right swimming style 0:57 Find something that floats 1:37 Take care of clothes 1:55 Decide what you’ll eat 2:16 Provide yourself with liquid 3:01 Save yourself properly 4:02 Don’t lose hope 5:06 SUMMARY - Panic definitely won’t help you. It can cloud your judgment and make you lose the rhythm of breathing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to calm down. - The style of swimming you choose determines how long your strength will last. In calm water, it’s better to swim on your back. If waves splash around you, it’s better to swim on your belly. - If you’re in the open sea as a result of a shipwreck or an airplane water landing, there must be plenty of things around you that perfectly keep afloat. It will be even better if it’s a boat or a raft with which ships are equipped. - Remember that open sunlight can be extremely dangerous. So don’t remove your clothes — they’ll protect you from the sun. - If you have rations, divide them into small daily portions. This will make them last for a long time, and you won’t have problems with digestion. - Try to fish even if you have stores of food. After all, fish contain some liquid. - You have to consume the liquid constantly but never drink seawater. - Try to ensure that you always have a couple of empty containers left for collecting rainwater. According to studies, drinking untreated rainwater is safe for your health. - • If you found fluorescein, dissolve it in the water when you see an airplane or ship. It forms a bright spot around you which can be easily seen from the air and from afar. Invasions of the Sea Peoples: Egypt & The Late Bronze Age Collapse

08:41
The years between around 1500 and 1200 BC are often cited as some of the most prosperous that the world had ever seen. The Eastern Mediterranean world inhabited by the Egyptians, the Hittites and the Minoans, as well as numerous smaller states around them, was a truly cosmopolitan system rarely seen in world history. Greek and Hittite trade goods regularly show up in archaeological sites in Egypt, whereas Egyptian hieroglyphs and trade goods are found in places such as the island of Crete and Mycenae. One shipwreck off the coast of Turkey carried goods from nine different states aboard. As evidenced by substantial diplomatic communications as well as trade, the world of the Late Bronze Age was a vast interconnected system. The culmination of an unbroken cultural line which had existed since the first cities three thousand years before. Little did the inhabitants of these lands know however that from around 1200 BC their world would catastrophically and violently fall apart in a decades long cataclysm known as the Late Bronze Age Collapse. Lost At Sea - Jet Ski - Shot With Gopro - Samsung Galaxy S5 Saved Our Lives - Williams Family Fun

03:18
The Gopro recorded us jet skiing at 110 miles (exaggeration) an hour. After hitting a huge wave we flew about 40 feet away from the jet ski. It was very difficult to swim with the waves and the life vest. The waves pushed us further and further away from the jet ski and from each other. Thanks to emergency 911 dialing on the water resistant Galaxy S 5 we were able to contact 911/EMT and were rescued by the sheriff/Coast Guard. We were found by the coast guard 45 minutes later. It was around 6pm when they found us. Thank God becaseu it was starting to get dark. Everything was caught on filmed with a Gopro Hero 3+. I had to marry this guy after this experience! He kept me at peace the entire time. He kept telling me to stay calm when all I could think about was sharks ripping my feet off. We are now married with our irst child and loving our adventurous happily ever after. #GoPro #Samsung #TybeIsland #LoveStory "A family that plays together, stays together." 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed (Eric Cline, PhD)

01:10:18
From about 1500 BC to 1200 BC, the Mediterranean region played host to a complex cosmopolitan and globalized world-system. It may have been this very internationalism that contributed to the apocalyptic disaster that ended the Bronze Age. When the end came, the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from Greece and Italy in the west to Egypt, Canaan, and Mesopotamia in the east. Large empires and small kingdoms collapsed rapidly. With their end came the world’s first recorded Dark Ages. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in Greece and the other affected areas, setting the stage for the evolution of Western society as we know it today. Professor Eric H. Cline of The George Washington University will explore why the Bronze Age came to an end and whether the collapse of those ancient civilizations might hold some warnings for our current society. Considered for a Pulitzer Prize for his recent book 1177 BC, Dr. Eric H. Cline is Professor of Classics and Anthropology and the current Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute at The George Washington University. He is a National Geographic Explorer, a Fulbright scholar, an NEH Public Scholar, and an award-winning teacher and author. He has degrees in archaeology and ancient history from Dartmouth, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania; in May 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree (honoris causa) from Muhlenberg College. Dr. Cline is an active field archaeologist with 30 seasons of excavation and survey experience. The Sea Peoples and the Trojan War (Lecture 4)

32:23
Archaeology and the Trojan War: In this lecture series by Eric H.Cline you will delve deep into the Trojan war between the Trojans and the Greeks while separating fact from fiction. The Trojan War, captured forever in Homer's epic poem the Iliad, resonates to the present day in the popular imagination, and this magnificent confrontation continues to exert a tremendous influence on modern audiences. But did Troy actually exist? And if so, where is it located? Was the Trojan War actually fought? If it was, did it take place over the course of ten years, as Homer wrote, or was it a much longer series of battles? And why was the war fought? Could Helen's face alone really have launched a thousand ships? In this course, esteemed professor Eric H. Cline examines the real history of Troy and delves into the archaeological discoveries (which continue to the present day) that help to answer the questions above. Through an entertaining and incisive analysis of known data, Professor Cline provides a fuller, richer understanding of this historic clash.

10 Tips to Survive Dangerous Sea Situations

07:45
Can open water swimming be dangerous? How to stay safe in a river, lake, sea, or ocean? An innocent-looking water dam that acts as a death trap, an invisible water current that pushes you into the sea, and a powerful wave that breaks on the shore. It should all be fun in the sun, but there are some real dangers lurking in the water when you’re out swimming… If the current gets you, you’ll need to swim around it to escape. The key is to do something counterintuitive: you'll need to swim down instead of up. Swim toward the dam, then curl up and swim downward. Swim far enough down that you aren’t trapped by the current. Then while you’re still underwater, swim away from the current, which should be above you at this point. It’s only safe to come up to the surface once you’ve put enough distance between you and the current. TIMESTAMPS: Beware of sun exposure 0:37 Be very careful with inflatables 1:11 Don’t underestimate a river current 1:40 Sail safely 2:12 Beware of the risk of picking up illnesses in rivers and lakes 2:36 Know how to respond to a shark attack 3:16 Check the weather report 3:55 Be aware of the strength of the waves 4:29 Be mindful of rip currents 5:14 Don’t go near a low-head water dam 6:05 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Just a few hours of direct sun can lead to some very unpleasant symptoms like dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. - The wind can push inflatables very easily, and that’s how people have been carried away deep into the sea. - Because some rivers aren’t so deep, they might give a false sense of security. However, they can have a fast undercurrent. - The most important step is to have life jackets onboard that fit the passengers. If you can, wear a life jacket for the entire trip. - Some algae can have harmful and toxic effects if touched or if you accidentally drink water containing algae. It can lead to eye and ear irritation. - Sharks are most active at dusk, dawn, and night. They also have a powerful sense of smell, so avoid going into the water if you have an open wound. - If you’re standing on the beach, you’ll be the tallest thing for miles. Therefore, there’s a high chance that lightning could strike you. - Some waves break at sea, and they’re rolling gently by the time they reach the shore. But other waves break right at the shore — where all beach-goers tend to be. - A rip current is a powerful current of water that moves from the shore into the sea. The main issue is that you can’t spot a rip current with your eyes. - If you like to bathe in streams or small rivers, they could have a low-head dam. To give you an idea of how dangerous they are, low-head dams are also called “drowning machines.” Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

Indonesia. Bajau (Sea Gypsies Tribe) | Tribes & Ethnic Groups

07:07
In this documentary we travel to Indonesia, the Sulawesi island, there we know the Toraja and Bajau, two ethnic groups who have a very particular culture and traditions. There, we attended a Toraja funeral, an event that they have become an amazing ritual of several days. We dive into the wonderful world that lies behind the coral reef that runs through large part of the Indonesian archipelago. And finally we boarded on the Bajau (sea gypsies) houseboats who live in even closer contact with the sea. In fact, they could not conceive of life without it. ▶ SUBSCRIBE! http://bit.ly/PlanetDoc Full Documentaries every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday! ▶ Documentary. "Indonesia. The Ghosts of Sulawesi" http://pdoc.es/SulawesiPL The inhabitants of Sulawesi have always had a very close relationship with the sea. These men belong to the Bugui ethnic group, considered the best boat builders and sailors in the Indian Ocean. But there is another ethnic group which lives in even closer contact with the sea. In fact, they could not conceive of life without it. That group is the Bajau. At the other end of the island, in the calm waters of the Gulf of Tomini, these nomads have for centuries conquered the sea. They live out their lives on these small, fragile boats called leppas, where they are born, marry, reproduce and die. In them they move along the coast, propelled by the winds and the currents, and rarely set foot on dry land. Their origins remain unknown, though some anthropologists believe they come from the south of the Malaysian peninsula. Since then, innumerable legends have surrounded these the Sea Gypsies They rarely venture far from the coast. Their lives are spent fishing close by the mangrove swamps and the coral reefs. Here, they find almost everything they need. The Bajau know many different fishing methods, but perhaps the most curious of all is this one, fishing with kites. The technique they use is simple but very effective. It consists of attaching a hook to the kite, which is made from fern leaves, and with the help of a pole, the fisherman can move the hook as far out as he wants. The swaying of the kite keeps the bait in constant movement, attracting above all the flying fish. The government tried to house the first families along the coast, but they were unable to adapt to dry land, and soon returned to their boats. Then, the Bajau suggesting building the village over the sea, and so Torosiaji was born. Though the greatest number of Bajaus live in Sulawesi, there are also groups of them in Myanmar, where they are called Moken, or ‘the people drowned by the sea’; in Thailand, they are known as the Chao Nam, or ‘water people’, and they can also be found along the coasts of the Philippines and Vietnam. 16:50:00 The mosque and the school are the only buildings in Torosiaji standing on dry land. Well, not exactly dry land, because they have been build on foundations made of coral. At midday, the waters are very shallow, and this is when the Bajau comb the sea bottom in search of food. Their basic diet is fish and rice. The rice they buy in the markets on the coast, where once a week the women go to sell the fish they have caught, and buy basic necessities such as fresh water. The Bajau are also magnificent divers, and can remain underwater for over five minutes, and dive down up to 15 metres. ▶ SUBSCRIBE | http://bit.ly/PlanetDoc ▶ FULL DOCUMENTARIES | http://bit.ly/Full-Docs ▶ TRIBES DOCUMENTARIES | http://bit.ly/PlTribes ▶ FACEBOOK | http://bit.ly/FBPDoc ▶ TWITTER | http://bit.ly/TwPDoc ▶ TUMBLR | http://bit.ly/TbPlDoc
People free sea lion entangled in garbage

04:37
On March 10, 2014, a sea lion was disentangled with help from Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre and Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff. Acting on reports of a sea lion with garbage around its neck, the team ventured into Fanny Bay, north of Nanaimo on the west coast of Vancouver Island. They came across a Steller sea lion that had a large scar from when it was previously entangled, but they did not find the sea lion in question. The team eventually came across another sea lion at the other end of the bay, this time a young male California sea lion, that had garbage stuck around its neck. The Aquarium's veterinarian, Dr. Martin Haulena, tranquilized it before cutting the plastic strap off and treating the wound. The Vancouver Aquarium runs the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre where it treats "inpatients." It also works cooperatively with other organizations to rescue and treat animals in the ocean. Many thanks to Canadian Wildlife Federation for their support on this project. Find out more: http://www.vanaqua.org/mmr Donate: vanaqua.org/donate The Vancouver Aquarium is a self-supporting, non-profit society. It does not receive ongoing funds to provide around-the-clock care for rescued and rehabilitated animals.

♥ In Sea of Thieves No Where Is Safe - PvP Multiplayer Gameplay

23:13
It's time to do some PvP on the open ocean! With an ending you probably didn't see coming. We got into some ship vs ship warfare and even some close range gun battles to balance everything out. Grouped up for some 4 player multiplayer with Bryan, Bakery and Tim. Was honestly some of the most fun I've had in games in quite some time. Sea of Thieves is a pirate-themed action-adventure cooperative multiplayer game played from a first-person perspective. The game features cross-platform play between Windows-based PCs and Xbox One video game consoles. A group of players travel and explore an open world via a pirate ship and assume different roles such as steering, hoisting sails, navigation, firing cannons and other tasks. Players will embark on quests, collect loot and engage in combat with other players. Sea of Thieves is a shared world game, which means groups of players will encounter each other regularly throughout their adventures. The game has a cartoonish art style and exaggerated physics that allow players to be shot out of ship cannons. I've been streaming a variety of games over on twitch! The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center is dedicated to environmental education and the encouragement of better citizen participation in the protection of our natural environment.    The not-for-profit organization was started by Marjory Stoneman Douglas in 1985 when she was 95 years old. The programs started in 1969 as a summer camp program and in 1971 began as a year round school field trip program for 6th grade students by a group of Miami-Dade Public School teachers.       In 1985 Marjory was called upon to save the program from budget cuts and decided that children are the future stewards of our natural world and we should educate them about their natural environment. Key Biscayne was the perfect spot for that because we have all the Florida eco-systems right in one spot.  The seagrass, the coastal  hardwood hammock, mangroves, dunes, and the fossilized mangrove reef.   She felt the community needed a "Nature Center by the Sea".  As people explore nature, they will learn to preserve and protect what they love.  Website:  http://bit.ly/biscaynenature Open seven days a week 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Free of charge  Our new series Beyond the Tide explores the mysterious world of the ocean and brings you closer than ever to its most fascinating creatures.
