In today's video, we start a series of book reviews on books that nomads would find interesting or that have strongly impacted and changed my life. In this first video of the series, we focus on books that specifically focus on nomads. The books in this review are:'
"How to Live in a Car, Van or RV" by Bob Wells (me) http://amzn.to/2BTPaTI
"Walden on Wheels:" by Ken Ilgunus http://amzn.to/2BysKLH
"American Nomad" by Richard Grant http://amzn.to/2BB1Z9k
"Travels with Charley" by John Steinbeck http://amzn.to/2BCa1yD
"Blue Highways--A Journey Into America: by William Least Heat Moon http://amzn.to/2B4zyzu
No matter how cheap your budget, you can learn something from this video about vandwelling and how to turn your car, van, caravan or RV into a surprisingly cheap and mobile, tiny house on wheels! Then you can live the life of your dreams by adopting a minimalist, simple and frugal life of travel and adventure as a gypsy, nomad, traveler or even a prepper by dropping out of the Rat Race and becoming a full-time Vandweller or RVerr, @vanlife.

John Steinbeck's speech at the Nobel Banquet at the City Hall in Stockholm, December 10, 1962
"Literature was not promulgated by a pale and emasculated critical priesthood singing their litanies in empty churches - nor is it a game for the cloistered elect, the tinhorn mendicants of low calorie despair. Literature is as old as speech. It grew out of human need for it, and it has not changed except to become more needed." - Steinbeck
"Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires" - Steinbeck
"Our species is the only creative species, and it has only one creative instrument, the individual mind and spirit of a man. Nothing was ever created by two men. There are no good collaborations, whether in art, in music, in poetry, in mathematics, in philosophy. Once the miracle of creation has taken place, the group can build and extend it, but the group never invents anything. The preciousness lies in the lonely mind of a man. And now the forces marshaled around the concept of the group have declared a war of extermination on that preciousness, the mind of man. By disparagement, by starvation, by repressions, forced direction, and the stunning blows of conditioning, the free, roving mind is being pursued, roped, blunted, drugged. It is a sad suicidal course our species seems to have taken. And this I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in all the world.
And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which limits or destroys the individual. This is what I am and what I am about. I can understand why a system built on a pattern must try to destroy the free mind, for this is the one thing which can by inspection destroy such a system. Surely I can understand this, and I hate it and I will fight against it to preserve the one thing that separates us from the uncreative beasts. If the glory can be killed, we are lost." -East of Eden 1952
"I guess this is why I hate governments. It is always the rule, the fine print, carried out by the fine print men. There's nothing to fight, no wall to hammer with frustrated fists."-Travels with Charley, 1962
"What good's an opinion if you don't know?"-Travels with Charley
"Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power."
"...there is a base theme. Try to understand men, if you understand each other you will be kind to each other. Knowing a man well never leads to hate and nearly always leads to love."

A video tour of John Steinbeck's other New York house -- the one by the sea in Sag Harbor, Long Island. Caretaker John Stefanik let me walk around while he and his son did their work on the evening of Sept. 22, 2010. Steinbeck left on his "Travels With Charley" trip on Sept. 23, 1960. The next morning I came back to the house and started retracing that 10,000 mile trip around the USA. Don't ask me why. Buy my book "Dogging Steinbeck" at Amazon.com or see TruthAboutCharley.com
Correction: In my voiceover I say that Steinbeck waded out on his pier to rescue his boat during Hurricane Donna; it was actually his neighbor's pier that his boat was pinned against after breaking loose from its anchor in the middle of Morris Cove.

Retracing John Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley" trip: On Sept. 22, 2010, I slept with the yachts on the Sag Harbor pier in the back of my RAV4 -- the first of 20 times I'd do so. I went out to Steinbeck's house at about 7 a.m., pulled into his driveway and then shot a little video of the trip by road and three ferries to New London, Conn. On the long ferry ride from Orient Point I met Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist john Woestendiek and his dog Ace, who were also chasing Steinbeck's ghost -- but at a slower pace than I was. John was using Ace's bandana to wipe off Ace's "eye boogers."Read the details of my trip retracing John Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley" route in my Amazon.com book "Dogging Steinbeck." A video tour of the fabulous house on Deer Isle, Maine, where John Steinbeck stayed for two days in late September on his "Travels With Charley" trip in 1960. Owned by Eleanor Brace, designed by a descendant of the poet Longfellow, it was where Steinbeck's agent, Elizabeth Otis, vacationed every summer for 30 years. Otis rented the rustic cottage on the grounds, where Steinbeck said he slept in his pickup-camper Rocinante. If this is what author John Steinbeck was saying about overpopulation in 1960 (as recorded in "Travels With Charley: In Search of America," just imagine what the old curmudgeon would have to say about the subject today.
