Linux server installed with Oracle pre-requisites, in 15 minutes or less.
This video demonstrates the power of PXE booting, and automating Operating System installation with Red Hat Kickstart and similar technologies. The raw footage is 13 minutes. Which is actually quite fast, but is rather boring to watch. The video has been edited to demonstrate the little amount of interaction required to meet Oracle pre-requisites, when these pre-installation requirements have been automated. The stuff that has been edited for time, follows. 1) The long boot process: system scanning SCSI bus and RAID controllers; basic self tests on hardware. 2) Startup of the RedHat installation: it takes a few minutes for all of the disk and hardware drivers to load. 3) Data partition formatting: the largest volume took well over a minute to complete formatting. Solaris is a Unix operating system originally developed by Sun Microsystems. Solaris is known for its scalability, especially on SPARC systems, and for originating many innovative features such as DTrace, ZFS and Time Slider. Solaris supports SPARC-based and x86-based workstations and servers from Oracle and other vendors. Starting from version 10, the Solaris licence changed and the product was distributed free of charge for any system or purpose, but after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle in 2009, the product is once again proprietary with a restrictive licence. Using Oracle to read data from SQL Server
Hi everyone, Andy from Easysoft Limited here, what I want to show you today is how to get data from SQL Server into Oracle. Now for this we will be accessing SQL Server 2014 from Oracle 12 and getting data across. This could be quite easily be any SQL Server version from 2008 and any Oracle version from 11.2, the configuration and process is the same. We can obviously get access to data on SQL Server prior to 2008 and Oracle prior to version 11.2 but it will need a different configuration to what I am going to show you today The plan is also to add more data to the SQL Server table and show this new data back in Oracle. To start off you'll need access to ensure that you have access to your SQL Server and Oracle databases. You'll also need the Easysoft SQL Server ODBC Driver available from www.easysoft.com; just download it, install it and request the free 14 day trial licence. Before we start we need to make some changes to the standard Easysoft config files. cat /etc/odbc.ini Here I have changed Mars Connection to Yes. It must be set to "Yes" if you are connecting to SQL Server 2005 or newer. Easysoft supports all SQL data types from the version of SQL Server from version 7. Oracle supports data types that are common to most ODBC Drivers, but not some of the SQL Server ones. If you intend to access VARCHAR(MAX) for example, then there are some additional settings that need to be set up. Now as I would like to show you VARCHAR(MAX) data moving from SQL Server to Oracle, I have made the relevant change. As you can see, VarMaxAsLong says "Yes" We now need to create a link from Oracles Database Gateway (DG4ODBC) to the ODBC datasource that we already have, this is done in an init(sid) oracle file; let's have a look at our file. cat $ORACLE_HOME/hs/admin/initsqlsrv.ora Please note that HS_NLS_NCHAR must be set to UCS2 Oracle assume that most database vendors use UTF-8 for wide characters, however Easysoft, like almost all ODBC Driver vendors (including Oracles own ODBC Driver) uses UCS2 for wide characters. So that's the link between DG4ODBC and the datasource setup correctly. Next we need to set up the Listener entry The Oracle Listener waits for incoming requests from the Oracle database. For the Oracle Listener to listen for requests, information about DG4ODBC must be added to the Oracle Listener configuration file, listener.ora cat $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora The PROGRAM=dg4odbc tells the Listener that we are wanting to use the Oracle database gateway to communicate with ODBC. The ENVS=LD_LIBRARY_PATH tells Oracle what library to load Now that's all set up and OK we need to tell Oracle which server to attach the listener entry to. This is done in tnsnames.ora, and he is the file that we ensured was set up earlier. cat $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora The Oracle Listener now needs to be restarted. lsnrctl stop lsnrctl start OK, that's now started the Listener up again. So we have ensured that all the configuration files are set up correctly. The Listener and tnsnames.ora both set up OK. The final step is to create a link from the Oracle database to the "tnsnames.ora" entry. CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK ODBC CONNECT TO "test" IDENTIFIED BY "test" USING 'sqlsrv_ptr'; Right, that's all done. Let's access the data in SQL Server now. select * from [email protected]; Where 'demo' is the name of the SQL Server table and 'odbc' is the public database link name. OK, there we have the data. So to recap, I'm in Oracle and we have managed to read the data from SQL Server. Let's just add an additional row in that SQL Server table and retrieve the new data in Oracle. quit; /usr/local/easysoft/unixODBC/bin/isql.sh -v sqlsrv insert into demo values (2,'Easysoft') select * from demo select * from [email protected]; And there is the new data. Easysoft Limited can help you with your data access ... for our full range of ODBC and JDBC Drivers, Bridges and Gateways visit easysoft.com Be sure to let us know if you have any comments or questions. Until next time, thanks again and we'll see you again soon.

Sharding in Oracle Database
Held in March 2018 Oracle Sharding is a scalability and availability feature for custom-designed OLTP applications that enables distribution and replication of data across a pool of Oracle databases that do not share hardware or software. The pool of databases is presented to the application as a single logical database. Applications elastically scale (data, transactions and users) to any level, on any platform, simply by adding additional databases (shards) to the pool. Scaling up to 1000 shards is supported. Full Transportable Export/Import into the DBaaS Cloud - Oracle 12c
Video provided by Roy Swonger - Database Upgrade and Utilities Product Manager and Senior Director at Oracle Corporation Video lenght: 20 minutes This video demonstrates first of all how to use the Oracle Database 12c feature "Full Transportable Export/Import". This feature utilized Transportable Tablespaces as a cross-version and cross-platform migration technology but let Oracle Data Pump handle all the manual stuff involved with TTS and xTTS in just one command. Furthermore the feature can be combined with RMAN Incremental Backups to decrease the downtime if necessary and desired. Please find a presentation at the Database Upgrade Blog at: https://blogs.oracle.com/UPGRADE/ in the Slides Download Center titled: Full Transportable Export/Import with RMAN Incrementals In addition Roy is demonstrating also how to utilize this feature to migrate a database into the Oracle DBaaS Cloud. Interesting fact: Even though Full Transportable Export is an Oracle Database 12c feature included in the standard license set it can be used with an Oracle or Oracle database - but the destination version must be at least an Oracle Database (or newer). Further question? Please get in touch with us via the Oracle Database Upgrade Blog: https://blogs.oracle.com/UPGRADE/ Thanks!

What Makes the Oracle Exadata DB Machine Special
What Makes the DB Machine Special A Database Machine consists of two sets of Linux* machines. There's one set of Linux machines that we call compute nodes, and these have masses of CPU, masses of RAM, and they run your database instances. There's a second set of Linux machines that have a vast amount of disk space. These are your storage tier, and it's the Exadata software that links the compute nodes to the cell nodes, the cell nodes of the storage machines. Now, you cannot install the Exadata software independently. It comes pre-installed on your DB machine. I think, with earlier releases, it was possible to license Exadata software independently and install it on your own box, but certainly with the current release, you cannot get it unless you buy a DB machine. Well, what does Exadata deliver? It delivers certain capabilities that you cannot get in any other environments, and these are the abilities that we'll be studying in the next few slides. The Smart Scan, that's the one that gets all the publicity. It's the ability to offload a large amount of the SQL processing from the database tier from the compute nodes to the storage tier to the cell nodes. You have a storage tier that is aware of the database and can take over some of the workload of executing your SQL.

What is DATABASE VIRTUALIZATION? What does DATABASE VIRTUALIZATION mean? DATABASE VIRTUALIZATION meaning - DATABASE VIRTUALIZATION definition - DATABASE VIRTUALIZATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Database virtualization is the decoupling of the database layer, which lies between the storage and application layers within the application stack. Virtualization of the database layer enables a shift away from the physical, toward the logical or virtual. Virtualization enables compute and storage resources to be pooled and allocated on demand. This enables both the sharing of single server resources for multi-tenancy, as well as the pooling of server resources into a single logical database or cluster. In both cases, database virtualization provides increased flexibility, more granular and efficient allocation of pooled resources, and more scalable computing. The act of partitioning data stores as a database grows has been in use for several decades. There are two primary ways that data has been partitioned inside legacy data management solutions: 1. Shared-Data Databases–an architecture that assumes all database cluster nodes share a single partition. Inter-node communications is used to synchronize update activities performed by different nodes on the cluster. Shared-data data management systems are limited to single-digit node clusters. 2. Shared-Nothing Databases–an architecture in which all data is segregated to internally managed partitions with clear, well-defined data location boundaries. Shared-nothing databases require manual partition management. In virtual partitioning, logical data is abstracted from physical data by autonomously creating and managing large numbers of data partitions (100s to 1000s). Because they are autonomously maintained, resources required to manage the partitions are minimal. This kind of massive partitioning results in: 1. partitions that are small, efficiently managed and load balanced; and 2. systems that do not required re-partitioning events to define additional partitions, even when hardware is changed “Shared-data” and “shared-nothing” architectures allow scalability through multiple data partitions and cross-partition querying and transaction processing without full partition scanning. Partitioning database sources from consumers is a fundamental concept. With greater numbers of database sources, inserting a horizontal data virtualization layer between the sources and consumers helps address this complexity. Rick van der Lans, author of multiple books on SQL and relational databases, has defined data virtualization as "the process of offering data consumers a data access interface that hides the technical aspects of stored data, such as location, storage structure, API, access language, and storage technology."

Oracle Renewal Looming - Consider DB2! 2017 05 16
The Fillmore Group is inviting organizations frustrated with rising Oracle costs to join us for a webinar focusing on the two primary motivations behind DB2 migrations: cost and functionality. Session attendees will perform a self-analysis to compare similar version license costs, and gain an understanding of the technical features included in DB2 for on-premise use – BLU, pureScale, and the Data Partitioning Feature – as well as a brief overview of cloud deployment and SaaS options. The session also includes an overview of the migration process, as anyone considering a move needs to understand the time and effort involved. Sound boring? It won’t be! The session will be delivered by IBM Champions Frank Fillmore and Kim May. Frank has participated in IBM’s annual “Break Free Forum” and Kim has worked with several Oracle customers exploring migrations to DB2. We understand this is a complicated comparison but will do our best to make the session entertaining without including too much Oracle bashing. But maybe a bit.

Oracle Data Guard Tutorial - Advanced Techniques (Part 4 of 4)
Part 4 of SkillBuilders Tutorial "Beyond Data Guard". In this segment Oracle Certified Master DBA John Watson discusses and demonstrates The Read Mostly Database and using Data Guard to enhance performance by using the Standby Database for Query and directing DML to the Primary. For more see www.SkillBuilders.com/DataGuard. John: Now, the last topic. I've just got time to dealing with this. The last topic I want to look at is - I'd like to call it the read mostly database. This is a very nice technique. We're getting even more value out of your physical standby because remember what I've talked about before? When you open your database read-only you can write a very limited amount of data, basically only temporary data. Opening it read-write to the snapshot standby, yes, it's read-write but then you're not applying the redo so it's no longer valid as a real time data warehouse. The read mostly database is a compromise between the two. So it adds even more value ideally to Active Data Guard. It would function without Active Data Guard license but Active Data Guard is where you're going to get most benefits of this. This is where we've come to that low balancing question we had earlier. If you have say two applications, perhaps one application is your standard OLTP application. The other application is your query application. Maybe you've got business objects or discoverer. Business objects applications, discover applications, they're read intensive. They run massive queries. But they also do an occasional bit of DML. Not much, but they do enough to mean you cannot run them against read-only database in many circumstances. So what we need to do is redirect the small amount of DML to the primary while running all heavy weight queries against the standby. In a way, that means your application doesn't even know it's happening. How can I do that? I can do it like this. On my primary, as we see on the slide, send them some database links. So, on my primary which is Madrid, I'll begin by creating a user. I do need to start manage recovery here. So I cancelled recovery, I opened a database, let apply going. I'm about to connect to a user I haven't even created.

How To Make Partition on Centos 6 KVM | SolusVM
I make this video for those who have limited knowledge about Linux partition lvm groups. Note: This is an example how to make a partition on Centos 6 for KVM virtualization I make custom drives and set custom space. You can visit Solus VM documentation site https://documentation.solusvm.com/display/DOCS/Partitioning KVM Host / 80GB+ (KVM templates & iso's will be stored in /home/solusvm/kvm) SWAP 4GB+ (Virtual servers may use host swap if there is a real memory shortage) Logical Volume Group (LVM) remaining space (Logical Volume Group Only, SolusVM will create the logical volumes for the virtual servers inside this group) Icon The Volume Group Name CANNOT be KVM as /dev/kvm/ is a directory created on install. The PE Size should be set to 32M not the Default of 4M. http://www.pakgaming.pk Thanks for watching :)
