In the rare video, the clever reptile turns on its side to make itself too big for the prowling predator's mouth. To help confuse the salivating shark even more, the turtle swims in tight circles around the giant fish. The fascinating footage was shot off the Cocos Islands, off Costa Rica, by Randall Arouz. This video shows the detrimental effects of so-called ghost nets on marine animals. ***Warning: GRAPHIC CONTENT*** Video Credit and Copyright: Christine Figgener *** This footage is managed exclusively by Viralvideouk.com. If you wish to license this footage please contact [email protected] For more viral videos check here https://www.youtube.com/user/viralvideouk1 ** ----- Almost to the day exactly one year ago my research team found a plastic drinking straw embedded in a male olive ridley sea turtle's nostril (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wH878t78bw). We removed it and hopefully eased his suffering and improved his quality of life. This past 9th of August 2016, my research team once again encountered a sea turtle in distress. We found an exhausted olive ridley female swimming close to our research boat and she was dragging a huge bulk of discarded fishing net behind her. Parts of it were wrapped around her throat and had already started to cut into her flesh. We took her onboard our boat, cut-off the net, and disinfected her cuts with iodine. Due to the knowledge of the scarcity of sea turtle rehab facilities and lack of expert care for injured sea turtles in Costa Rica, we released the female back into the water since she seemed otherwise healthy and strong. As biologists, we don't actively seek out injured wildlife, but our research happens to position us at the front-lines of reality looking at the detrimental effects of human impact on wildlife. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our research is approved by the US IACUC and is conducted under research permits issued by the Costa Rican government, MINAE/SINAC and CONAGEBio. If you like what my research team and I are doing, please consider donating to our GoFundMe campaign to finance our next field season. https://www.gofundme.com/wuhvd6zj If you would like to find out more about our work in Costa Rica and the members of our field team, Brie Myre, Kim Lato, and Marcus Saikaley, check out our field blog http://plotkinlabtamu.wixsite.com/plotkinlab/blog At this point, I would like to thank again everyone that donated to my GoFundMe Campaign during the past year! Without you, this field season 2016 wouldn't have been possible and we wouldn't have been to the right time at the right place to help. Thank you! These nets, often nearly invisible in the dim light, can be left tangled on a rocky reef or drifting in the open sea. They can entangle fish, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, dugongs, crocodiles, seabirds, crabs, and other creatures, including the occasional human diver. Acting as designed, the nets restrict movement, causing starvation, laceration and infection, and suffocation in those that need to return to the surface to breathe. From the elusive cave dwelling salamander, to the invincible koi fish, these are 10 of the OLDEST living creatures ! Koi -- Well known to inhabit decorative ponds, Koi are a domesticated and ornamental variety of the common carp. Certain varieties of koi are thought to live between 100-200 years. A famous red koi named “Hanako” reportedly lived to be 225 years old. Tortoise -- Tortoises are known for their longevity … but did you know the oldest tortoise lived to the ripe old age of 250 years old! Well, there is some controversy about that… But the story goes that Adwaita was captured in the Seychelles Islands in the 1700s, and was donated to the Alipore Zoo in India in 1875, and lived there -- outliving his keepers -- until 2006. Greenland Shark -- They’re also known as the Grey Shark or the Sleeper Shark … but they’re not as well known as the Great White although the Greenland rivals their size at over 20 feet long and weighing nearly 2500 pounds. One reason for the animal’s anonymity is their habitat. Native to North Atlantic waters, they prefer colder temperatures and tend to swim as deep as 2200 meters. And they’re thought to have long lifespans, possibly over 200 years. That number was arrived at when a shark was caught and tagged near Greenland in 1936. When it was recaptured in 1952, researchers found it had grown 6 cm longer. Following that formula, a mature 7-meter shark would be more than 200 years old. Ocean Quahog (qwa-hog) -- Much like the age of a tree can be deduced from its rings, these clams have dark concentric rings or banding on their shells that researchers interpret as annual marks. Judging from those rings, some specimens have been estimated at over 400 years old. In one notorious case from 2006, an ocean quahog clam nicknamed Ming was taken off the coast of Iceland. When its annual marks or growth rings were counted, the clam’s age was calculated at 405. When scientists opened the shell to study the animal’s insides, they effectively killed the clam. However, later analysis including carbon-14 dating proved the clam was actually 507 years old, making it the oldest individual animal whose age could be verified. It also earned Ming a Guinness Record for oldest mollusk. Ming, by the way, was named for the Chinese dynasty that was in power around the time it was born. Turritopsis Nutricula Jellyfish -- This animal might have actually found the fountain of youth. Endemic to the Caribbean Sea and the Mediterranean, it has the ability to cycle from mature adult stage to primordial birth stage, and back again … seemingly able to repeat the process endlessly. It’s the only species in the world capable of this sort of transformation. At this point researchers are unsure if the creature’s lifespan has any natural limit … maybe that’s why the creature is also known as the Immortal Jellyfish. Mata Mata Turtle -- In Spanish, the name “Mata Mata” translates to ‘kill kill’, and are found in the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. They’re identified by their unique neck which is actually longer than its vertebra. That long neck functions as a natural snorkel, allowing the animal to keep its nose above water while staying staying on the bottom of a stream. They can also stretch their neck and open their mouth wide to create a vacuum, enabling them to swallow fish whole, since their jaws aren’t able to chew food. As adults, they’re known to measure around around 18 inches and weigh up to 33 pounds, and are readily available in the exotic pet trade. If you want one, keep few things in mind: They have a steep price tag and they’re known to live between 40 to 75 years … if you really pamper them, they might make it past 100!. Sea Sponge -- In 2016, a massive sea sponge was found off the Hawaiian coast that measured 3.5 meters long, 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters high, residing over 2000 meters below the surface. That size gives it claim to be the world’s largest sponge … and possibly the oldest living animal in the world! You can see the creature in these pictures from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The images were captured by two remote operated vehicles. The research team that made the discovery hasn’t been able to determine an exact age for the sponge. However, researcher David Wagner said he’s encountered other huge coral species at these depths that can live to be a few thousand years old … with the oldest being 4500 years old! This is the part 1 of our tour in Cebu, Philippines. We left for Cebu on December 31st and spent the New Year’s Eve in a high rise apartment from Airbnb. The view was great and the night was very peaceful We left for our first trip in Moalboal, Cebu which was about 2 hours away from the city early in the morning. We woke up really late but our driver was kind enough to wait for us a little. In Moalboal, we had to have a brief orientation on their rules and regulations and what to expect in our trip. They do not allow touching the Sea Turtles and they protect the sea as much as they can. After all, it is a tourist spot that they have to protect. Pescador island is about 7 minutes away from the mainland. We were expecting a lot of fish and coral reefs but we were kind of disappointed. The corals are almost bleached and there weren’t a lot of fish to see. Turtle point and the sardines run didn’t fail us though. The moment we came, we already saw a sea turtle hiding in the sea floor. It was huge I tell you!! It was very majestic and it made me really happy just by watching it. I wanted to get closer but when I was about to take off my life jacket, it swam away. The sardines run was very fascinating to watch as they swim in a school. It was almost impossible to see what is beyond them. We went Canyoneering on the first day, too but I think it was the highlight of the day so, I decided to put it in the part 2 of this video instead. On January 2nd, we travelled to Oslob, Cebu as early as 4 in the morning. It was only 1.5hours away from Moalboal but the line for the Whale Shark encounter was really long so we had to get in line earlier than 5:30. We set off to the sea in a row boat before 6AM. The sun was just rising so the view was beautiful. Even more, there wasn’t an assurance that we would see whale sharks because they didn’t show up in the last 2 days according to our guide. We stopped after about 5 minutes from the shore. There, the boatmen informed us that the whale sharks just came in 3 minutes ago so we were very lucky! We jumped right away and didn’t let the big waves stop us. I went a long way just to see these beautiful creatures! As we dived in, we saw them right away. They were beautiful. We watched them in their natural habitat as they were being fed by the fishermen. Next, after resting for few minutes, we headed to another island in Sumilon island bar. It was a beautiful white sand beach with pristine water and picturesque view. We thought that we would only stay there for a few minutes since we were already used to white sand beaches in Ilocos Norte but we enjoyed it more than we expected. We wouldn't have left if we weren't hungry. Although, there was such a struggle going to the island and going back to the mainland. The boats that they use are big an can withstand big waves but it can't get near to the shore. There was like a port in the mainland but it as not accessible because of "reasons". We were guessing that it was exclusive use for the guests in Sumilon Island resort. We went to Cebu with a tour guide. Even though you are a Filipino, Cebu can totally alienate you. Not all Cebuanos could speak Tagalog. They sometimes messed up our orders so make sure that you have a middleman in cases like these. My point of advice, take a tour guide. In our case, we could enjoy Cebu from CBU Citydrive tour. Although it says City drive, they took us to the Cebu south without any problems. They were very professional and on time. They even had a nice hostel with big rooms. There were 8 of us then but we fitted perfectly in one of their guestrooms.

There is an underwater world of terrifying creatures with demon mouths straight from the deep abyss. Here are 13 terrifying mouths of the deep! SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR Don't forget to CHECK OUT our latest upload: https://goo.gl/LUB8Xw 12. The Deep Sea Hatchetfish Since the critter dwells so far beneath the water’s surface, it has very special eyes which permanently tilt upward so as to soak up as much light as possible, despite existing hundreds of feet beneath the water’s surface; further, its mouth is eternally stuck in a noticeable frown, which the deep sea hatchetfish uses as a net to engulf its prey. 11. The Gulper Eel The gulper eel makes for an attractive predator for any victim who likes a little deep-sea entertainment, for the tail has tiny tentacles that are illuminated with hues of radiating pink and pulsating red. Found in extreme depths of the Atlantic Ocean, the gulper eel can grow up to 2.5 feet in size. 10. The Sea Urchin When examining a set of 0.8-inch-long grinders of a purple California sea urchin, researchers found that the teeth of an echinoderm are comprised of crystalline plates and fibers. After 200 million years of evolution, these bad boys have evolved to “perform better than manmade nonoptimized tools,” claims biophysicist Pupa Gilbert at the University of Wisconsin. 9. The Cookie-Cutter Shark The cookie-cutter shark belongs to the same order of the dogfish family and bears similarity in terms of their brown color and tubular shape. While they only grow to about 16 feet long, the cookie-cutter shark has the largest set of shark teeth in terms of size relativity. 8. The Gob-faced Squid If gob-face isn’t enough of an insult, the bizarre set of lips appearing like human teeth are. All that’s known of the peculiar spectacle is from one sighting alone after fishermen pulled a single gob-faced squid from the South Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 3,500 feet. This solo discovery lends the subtle reminder of how little we know about what lurks below. 7. The Stargazer Fish The stargazer is known for its master of camouflage and the surprise-attack method, as well as its weird, googly eyes and gigantic mouth. Found in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay region, the stargazer fish can grow up to twenty-two inches long. 6. The Sea Lamprey Found in rivers and estuaries spanning the United States and Europe, this parasite spends the bulk of its life in the ocean, and the rest of its time spawning evil offspring in the freshwater regions. The funnel-like sucking cavity proceeds to feed on the blood and fluids of its victim, rendering the catch a soulless, sack by the time the sea lamprey’s had its gory fix. 5. The Hagfish The hagfish has a skull but no spine with a velvety, smooth exterior. Also known as the slime eel, the jawless mouth features two pairs of horny, combed-shaped teeth on a plate that protracts and retracts when tearing off chunks of food. This class of Myxine fish is known for its mucus abilities which can get the creature out of a sticky situation. Pink or blue-grey, some exhibit riveting spots as these creatures are typically found on the muddy beds in cold waters from Vancouver to the Pacific Coast to Baja California, Mexico. The longest known hagfish was four feet and two inches in length. 4. The Goblin Shark Mother nature must have been having a bad day when she created a cross between monster and shark. Low and behold, the goblin shark, a creature more vicious and terrifying than even the infamous great white. The top and bottom teeth are attached by ligaments which allow the goblin shark to unhinge its mouth and grab its prey. Think of a bear trap that can leap out and grab you. 3. The Frilled shark The frilled shark is all business, with a mouth lined with twenty-five rows of backward facing teeth— a grand total of 300 chompers in all. The frilled shark exhibits a similar set of luminous tusks which are a bright white in contrast to its stark, brown body. The frilled shark can be found lurking in the deep abyss of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. 2. The Barbeled Dragonfish The barbeled dragonfish utilizes a sinister method of trickery to lure unsuspecting victims into their spikey, oversized mouth. This species of fish entices nearby swimmers with their barbell-shaped lures, dangling brightly lit bulbs which hang from their lower jaw. After displaying an entryway lined with rows of giant teeth, a simple tilt of the head can render a gaping orifice 120 degrees in width. 1. The Leatherback Turtle The leatherback sea turtle is the third largest reptile in the world, weighing up to 1,543 pounds. The teeth don’t fill just the mouth alone either, but rather these papillae rim the inside of the turtle’s mouth, esophagus, and gut. The purpose of the leatherback turtle's ferocious set of backward fangs is to prevent jellies from slipping out and achieving survival.
