(24 Feb 2018) ARMANI AGAINST SHOCK RHETORIC ON AND OFF RUNWAYS Giorgio Armani countered the increasingly violent tones surfacing in his native Italy's election campaign by producing an ethnically inspired collection - and in rejecting fashion shows that use shock tactics to get attention. Asked after his Giorgio Armani show for suggestions on translating the inclusion seen in his ethnically inspired collection for politics and other arenas, the designer responded, "I would not over do it with easy emotions at all costs, creating a spectacle." The 83-year-old fashion designer said he was calling himself out on the strategy of using emotion to incite strong reactions. He transitioned immediately to a comment on fashion houses that he thinks employ shocking images to attract attention. The reference to Gucci was clear. "One can do whatever he wants. But if I put on the runway a head under the arm, severed, we have reached the limit," Armani said, days after Alessandro Michele's "Cyborg" collection for Gucci featured two models carrying replicas of their own heads under their arms. Armani's collection for the next cold weather season took inspiration from many cultures "as an ode to coexistence as opposed to exclusion." The designer said "sophisticated simplicity" was the unifying element. Draped looks and soft jackets defined the silhouette. Ponchos were belted, skirts were knotted at the knee and trousers were loose and comfortable. The color palate heated up from the new neutral, pink, with gray to warmer tones of purple, blue and flamingo red, which Armani swirled together for a dreamy, iridescent effect. Evening wear featured colorful beaded and fringe jackets with velvet trousers. Dramatic furry hats topped the looks and jewelry included geometric shapes and tassles. IRIS VAN HERPEN'S SHOCK TACTICS IN PARIS The human body was in focus at Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen's sublime debut catwalk show Tuesday (4 MARCH 2014) on the ready-to-wear calendar. Van Herpen likes to shock. In this show the shock-factor saw three models writhing in suspended square plastic bags that had the oxygen sucked out. It disturbed several guests as it looked as if the models were in discomfort or couldn't breathe. In the clothes, embroidered beads on mini sheaths resembled shining human cells on models in jutting boots without heels. While some beautifully executed techofabric, silver, cocktail dresses glistened like organic fluid. Several looks also seemed to turn the body inside out: black and white chubby fur tops had the top slashed off to reveal flaps of fabric like exposed flesh. The collection perfectly towed the line between surreal artistry and wearability, but next time Van Herpen shouldn't try to frighten guests. Fellow designer also Rick Owens attended the show. "When you see what she's done in the short amount of time that she's been doing it, it's so laser sharp focused. And like no one else right now. And it's thrilling to see, to be, at the beginning of something like that," he said. PETA Opened a High-End Leather Store, but Inside the Goods Was Something Horrible Impressive stunt isn't just empty shock tactics, for a change. Today in Horrible Things that Defy Imagining, Ogilvy & Mather Bangkok teamed up with PETA to give leather shoppers the fright of their lives. In "Behind the Leather," we're introduced to a pop-up store called The Leather Work. Situated in a well-trafficked Bangkok shopping mall, it is convincingly outfitted with purses, shoes, jackets and accessories made of alligator, snakeskin and other exotic hides. So far, so good. But remember: This is PETA. The moment shoppers start examining the products a smidge more closely, it all starts going nightmarishly wrong. One handbag, when opened, is crammed with internal organs, still fixed to the skin. A still-beating heart pulsates as women drop the bag and leap backward. In the same vein, we thought the jacket-opening scene was the absolute worst of the scares, but Ogilvy pulled out all the stops: Gloves and shoes look innocent enough ... until you try them on, and find your hands and feet swathed in blood. The reactions are about as disgusted as you'd expect, which is probably pretty satisfying for everyone involved. The ad ends with a message: "For the exotic skins industry, cruelty is a daily business." People are then driven to PETAAsia.com/skins to learn more and help out. For PETA, whose modus operandi is generally about pushing people away while defiantly grabbing a chicken wing, we were surprised by how effective "Behind the Leather" actually is. The extremeness we expect is there, but the reasoning is sound and carried out with genuine conviction. It also got us thinking about our own hides, and what it must feel like to be skinned alive and discarded, left in pain for hours so the results can be worn for a pricetag. We're pretty sure the people who encountered The Leather Work won't be likely to spring for snakeskin handbags again anytime soon—or at the very least, they'll have something nice and traumatic to remember next time they reach for one.

Like many young people in the mid 70s Michael Salter adopted punk as his protest against ‘no future’ politics, dreary chart music and the pomp and excess of prog rock. But as the punk sub-culture split and evolved, Salter and his friends moved away from the spiky haired shock tactics to the sharp-suited, 1960s retro-style of the mods. The mod revival embraced the music of 60s bands such as The Who and created new acts such as The Jam and Secret Affair. It also saw the revival of scooter clubs across the country. But as in the 60s when mods and rockers fought running battles, the mod revival was steeped in violence and Salter doesn’t pull his punches in recalling the violent scenes played out most nights at Steamers night club in the centre of Bristol or the suburban violence which saw mods being attacked and leading the attacks in and around the pubs of Kingswood, Downend and Winterbourne. Punks on Scooters is Salter’s autobiographical account of the fashion, music and violence of the mod revival. The book also includes appendices with pieces on The Newbeats and Colonel Kilgore’s Vietnamese Formation Surf Team and contributions by mod girl Eve Pearce, leading Bristol mod Geoff Rice, Steamers DJ Jerry Cripps and Jon Andrews of Bristol mod band Mayfair. And yesterday, February 25, it was the turn of Welsh wonder JULIAN MACDONALD to have his models and latest designs sliding down a snowy catwalk. On Wednesday night, MacDonald unveiled a stunning autumn/winter 1999 collection that featured models in sleek designs gliding down an icy catwalk. This was winter coats as inspired by woolly bears; part of a collection the designer says is aimed at showing off the female form, and wrapping it in items that are both familiar -- like an old scarf or a teddy bear -- and luxurious -- like a sparkling gown. With faux-snow flurries opening his show, MacDonald said his collection and his ice-draped catwalk was inspired by the Alaskan landscape. But MacDonald eschews trends that alternatively raise and lower hemlines, saying he looks to creates items that are glamorous and sexy -- made for women with an attitude. MacDonald used models Jodie Kidd and Alek Wek, who like him, are rising stars in the fashion world. Later on, avant-gardist HUSSEIN CHALAYAN wowed crowds with a show replete with minimalist futurism. The Central St Martin's graduate, who is already developing a reputation of leaving audiences gasping with disbelief, produced another show that verged on the bizarre, with intricately designed items. Chalayan shocked audiences in the past by sending models down the catwalk wearing mouthpieces that clamped their jaws into a scream. But the designer who remains unapologetic about his shock tactics, this year displayed a more simple line, featuring only blacks and whites with futuristic collars. Welcome to the Weapons of War series, which aims to provide historical background information on the wide range of units and vehicles that make up Company of Heroes, supplemented with gameplay footage and historical media. The first episode of the Weapons of War series covers Soviet shock troops, the vanguard of many Russian offensive in the Great Patriotic War. In late 1941, five Soviet Shock armies were formed. These units were more heavily armed and better-trained than standard Russian infantry Army units, and received more armour and artillery support. Their primary purpose was to hammer the enemy's defences and force a breakthrough, in much the same fashion as the German blitzkrieg was performed. They usually went in first, before other units, and were sent where the fighting was thickest. They were considered the Soviet Union's premier elite formations until later when this role was assumed by the Guards, but the Shock Armies continued to play a pivotal role from their formation in 1941 until the War's end in 1945. It was the 3rd Shock Army that breached Berlin's outer defences and thrust deep into the city, and elements of the 5th shock army raised the banner over the Reichstag. The tactics of the Shock Armies were simple: strike hard, and strike fast. First, the enemy would be pounded with artillery and self-propelled guns before the Shock troops and tanks would charge in, cutting a swathe through the enemy's ranks, forcing the enemy to withdraw or devote a lot of manpower to reinforcing the threatened sector, leaving other areas exposed. Should the Shock troops fail to penetrate the enemy's lines, they would fall back, and another intense barrage would pound the enemy. The process would repeat until the enemy could no longer offer effective resistance, and the shock army would break through, leading the way for the Army units. The Shock Army Commander in Company of Heroes 2 illustrates well the idea of shock tactics, with an emphasis on overwhelming close-range firepower, artillery and air support. In-game, the Shock troopers wear SCS1B tan and brown camouflage overalls, and are equipped with Stalynoi Nagrudnik SN-42 steel body armour and PPSh sub-machine guns. They also have access to smoke and frag grenades as standard. The SN-42 breast plate is made of 2mm-thick pressed steel plates, a larger one covering the torso and a smaller one covering the groin. The SN-42 was capable of stopping an MP-40 round at 100 metres, or a Gewehr 43 round if the round struck at a sharp angle. The Kar98K's penetration was sufficient to perforate the plate at most ranges. The body armour was excellent for street fighting, where the proximity of engagements meant there wasn't a great deal of long-distance movement required. However, in the open, the extra weight was a detriment. Shock troops operated best when the enemy was within arm's reach, so they could make full use of their heavy weaponry and grenades. The same is true in Company of Heroes; Shock troops are very poor at long range, but at short range they are one of the best infantry units available. They can conceal their advance with smoke, let fly with grenades, and charge in, PPShs blazing. They work very well with armour, as they can protect vehicles from anti-tank infantry and use their smoke to break line of sight between AT weapons and the tank. In reality, not all Shock troops were armed with PPShs, but being an elite breakthrough force they would have had access to more specialist weaponry like the PPSh which worked very well in close quarter fighting. With their good training and equipment, the Shock troopers remained a potent enemy for the Germans throughout the Patriotic War, and won many victories for the Soviet Union in many pivotal battles. Just like in reality, the Company of Heroes shock troops are a force to be reckoned with.

That’s the view of current Premier League pundit, and former Arsenal defender, Martin Keown. Emery replaced Arsene Wenger at the Emirates during the summer with the Frenchman departing after 22 years in charge of the club. Emery had a tough start, losing his opening two Premier League games to Manchester City and Chelsea. But Arsenal have bounced back since then and gone on to win seven in a row in all competitions. And Keown, who won three Premier League titles with Arsenal, believes it took the Gunners squad some time to adjust to Emery’s tactics. “One of Arsene Wenger's 10 commandments was to never bark orders at his players from the sidelines,” Keown wrote in his Daily Mail column. “His view was that when players had the ball, that was their moment to shine. He did not want to overload them with information. “It is why Unai Emery's dynamic demeanour — which was in full flow against Watford — will have come as a shock to the Arsenal players. “In the first few weeks of the season, they seemed to be taking their manager's instructions too literally. Now, they are feeding off his energy. “By being so animated, Emery is showing the desire, passion and work ethic he wants from his players. “Wenger's approach from the touchline was one of nurture. His successor is more demanding.” Arsenal have been rocked in the past week with reports that Aaron Ramsey will leave the club in the summer at the end of his contract. And former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders can’t understand why Emery has let the situation come to this following a similar issue with Jack Wilshere last season. “I can’t understand it,” Saunders recently told talkSPORT. “He’s been at Arsenal for ten years and they’ve let his contract run down. “And it’s not just him, it happened with Ozil and it happened with Sanchez. “Once the players can see the finishing line on their contract, you’ve lost all control as a club. “They managed to keep hold of Ozil, but it has cost them an absolute fortune, and now this is what happens, the players are knocking on the door saying: ‘If he’s getting that, what are you going to give me?’. The bar has gone up. “It’s a game of poker now, but Arsenal have lost the power.”

The Book and the Soundtrack Like many young people in the mid 70s Michael Salter adopted punk as his protest against ‘no future’ politics, dreary chart music and the pomp and excess of prog rock. But as the punk sub-culture split and evolved, Salter and his friends moved away from the spiky haired shock tactics to the sharp-suited, 1960s retro-style of the mods. The mod revival embraced the music of 60s bands such as The Who and created new acts such as The Jam and Secret Affair. It also saw the revival of scooter clubs across the country. But as in the 60s when mods and rockers fought running battles, the mod revival was steeped in violence and Salter doesn’t pull his punches in recalling the violent scenes played out most nights at Steamers night club in the centre of Bristol or the suburban violence which saw mods being attacked and leading the attacks in and around the pubs of Kingswood, Downend and Winterbourne. Punks on Scooters is Salter’s autobiographical account of the fashion, music and violence of the mod revival. The book also includes appendices with pieces on The Newbeats and Colonel Kilgore’s Vietnamese Formation Surf Team and contributions by mod girl Eve Pearce, leading Bristol mod Geoff Rice, Steamers DJ Jerry Cripps and Jon Andrews of Bristol mod band Mayfair.
